Scripture Textual Analysis Paper

I chose the scripture text 2 Corinthians 4: 3- 6. I asked special permission from Dean of the chapel to record the reading at Chapel of the Unnamed Faithful. With the help of a seminary friend, I was able to record this reading for this assignment.
When I recorded this scripture text, I truly felt that God was speaking to me through that text. I believe that the scripture will speak to those that might listen to this recording. I was reminded that a “lector” is called to proclaim the word of God. In Dr. Ron Anderson’s words, the scripture reading is “the word proclaiming through us” and a “reminder of what God has done and is doing.”

Keeping in mind that scripture reading is not acting, but a performance, I used a Bible to read the scripture.

The Doctrine and Covenants is a book of divine revelations, given to members of the Church of Jesus Christ, to help further the establishment of Christ’s Kingdom and contains an invitation to follow the Lord Jesus Christ. As one engulfs oneself into the Doctrine and Covenants, one will find out that, just as the Book of Mormon is the keystone of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Doctrine and Covenants is a companion to the Book of Mormon and is the capstone of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Doctrine and Covenants gives new insight to gospel topics and one can further partake of the bread of life as one drinketh from the pages of the Doctrine and Covenants to come closer to Christ.…

Perkins/ Art of Prophesying, pp. 69-70. • Artificial memory aid (remembering places, images, and then what to say) is not supported by William Perkins for several reasons. First, it should not be used because it is cultic and unworthy manner of preparing sermon. • Perkins rather advocates for syllogistically, axiomatical, or methodical way of thinking to imprint the sermon on our mind.…

And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.…

“We are the misfits” was one of the last messages told by the pastor of the Evangelical Waterspring’s Chruch at 10:45 AM at 4250 25th East. After a long sermon of scripture, that was the leaving message before one final hymn performed by a very professional band. “We are the misfits” and their definition of a church as “people who shouldn’t be together but come together for the common goal of Jesus’s love.” I’d never particularly expected a saying like that to come out of a church or minister. In my experience, church and religious peoples were the norm, the majority, and sitting there surrounding by people swaying and singing and saying “amen” between pauses, I felt like I was the outsider.…

The Bible teaches us that God is personal, that he created every one of us for a purpose, knows us, and wants the very best for us. Paul expresses it this way: "We are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life" (Ephesians 2:9 10). The missions are a great work that crosses cultures and ethnic groups. The work is one out of the heart of the work of Jesus. You find God's will by getting as close to Jesus as you can and staying there.…

The extra credit opportunity I chose to attend was: “How to Interpret The Bible” presented by Mary Healy. This lecture was held in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. I, coming from a religious Christian background did not think I would learn anything that I did not already know, but I was very mistaken. It was very evident to me that Mrs. Healy knew a great deal about the subject matter from the beginning of her delivery. She began by talking about the two different senses that the Bible is interpreted in the spiritual and literal sense.…

The search for historical Jesus is a difficult one. As mentioned in the video "From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians," there is no written information about Jesus at the time that he lived, the written information we have is after the time of Jesus’ life and we do not know who the author(s) are. I believe that you have to integrate the historical, and archeology, findings with the messages in the Bible; you cannot ignore solid evidence. As we have learned in this class you must take into account the social norms of the time period of Jesus. You must also take into consideration the various meanings/translations of words from Arabic to Greek to English (Jews does not mean Jews as we know it today).…

The verse that stuck out to me the most was one I have read many times but only today did it really stand out to me. The verse talked about Jesus shining over the darkness and defeating it (John 1:5). I love this verse because it set the groundwork for the rest of the Gospels. It also stuck out to me how humble John the Baptist was when being questioned by the Pharisees.…

In the Bible, there are many places that tell us how we should talk, and what to say, and many other things about speech. For example. Matthew 12:34 "You snakes—how can you say good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." Here, its telling us that whatever comes out of our mouths, comes from our hearts, so if your heart is hard towards someone, you would probably speak harshly towards them.…
