One can delude oneself into believing that he is behaving morally. 3. Screwtape identifies monogamy or abstention as the “dilemma” God has placed humans in regarding sexual behavior. 4. According to Screwtape, the “whole philosophy of Hell” depends on the “axiom” that one thing is not another thing, and that oneself is not another self. Chastity is abstinence from sexual conduct. The dictionary definition of chastity is the state or practice of refraining from extramarital, or especially from all, sexual intercourse. Examples of the belief that chastity is unhealthy or unnatural in today’s society include: those who believe refraining from sex will allow for the buildup of fluids that need to be released, those who believe that chastity will cause atrophy of the hip muscles, and those who believe chastity will ruin relationships. 7. We are in the age of hip-hop. The “sexual taste” of our age is rather demanding. We want someone who is attractive and is open to doing anything. These demands are becoming impossible to fulfill. C.S. Lewis writes, in his essay titles We Have No "Right To Happiness," on pages 747 to 750, about an encounter he had with his neighbor named Clare and the thoughts he had afterward. Lewis describes a situation in which two people divorced their partners in order to marry each other, "Mr. A" and "Mrs. B." After entertaining different definitions of a human right and applying them to the event, Lewis concluded that the right his neighbor truly meant to describe was the right to, as he called it, "sexual happiness." Sexual happiness is treated exceptionally from the rest of the rights and moral codes people tend to hold, and he argued that this is undue. However, he stated that he could understand the reason for this: "It is part of the nature of a strong erotic passion-as distinct from a transient fit of appetite-that it makes more towering promises than any other emotion. " This is to say that the pursuit of sexual happiness…

Ms. Smalley English III 10/15/15 Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God “How dreadful is the state of those that are daily and hourly in the danger of this great wrath and infinite misery.” A quote by Jonathan Edwards in his famous sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, where he discusses his Puritan beliefs. In his sermon, Edwards uses strong words and violent imagery to portray concepts such as how unsaved Puritans are going to hell and how God’s wrath is torturous and merciless. Perhaps Edwards was not trying to scare people, but to inform them of how sinful they live their lives; however, the way he gets his point across is very harsh. "The God that holds you over the pit of Hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome…

El-Nia Shifa 3) The quotation from [Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God] by poet and Puritan religious leader Jonathan Edwards discusses God's strength and the power that he has over one's life. The quote states that it is only God's will and gratitude that protects humans from death. The quote portrays God as extremely powerful and upset leader who doesn't relate well with people, protects them out of a feeling of obligation and most times isn't afraid to end their lives. The quote coincides with Puritan beliefs that one's fate is chosen for them at birth and that they shouldn't take what they have for granted.…

"Chastity is always right" Some may agree with the statement that "Chastity is always right" because they are a Christian and they believe in the teachings of the Bible, one of which states that fornication or pre-marital sex is a sin. Another argument to support this is that God has made the human body to be treated as "his temple" and so should be kept holy. Having sex before marriage would mean that this individual is impure and this would not be pleasing to God. Therefore, they believe that chastity is always right. I disagree with the statement that "Chastity is always right" because it's their body, and their rules.…
