Screen Week Benefits

Shutting down our screens for a week would give us many opportunities to learn how to focus more, without being distracted. Electronics give people many chances to just procrastinate instead of getting important things done. Studies show that there are more negative aspects of using technology than positives ones. It’s hard to get work done when you’re texting people or updating your social media, but if you eliminated all screens, things can change.

Our school should participate in shut down your screen week to observe if there’s any change in the participating students attitude or grades. It would be interesting to see if the students are happier because they don't have a phone or if they’re sad to have no online communication with the outside world. It’s hard to do that when you’re using your phone because it takes up a lot of attention. People who are on their phones have a more likely chance of getting hurt, whether it's walking into a pole or getting robbed. The technology can be a danger and it's not a necessity, there can be other ways to be entertained and there are other ways of communicating.

When you’re surrounded by people on technology it makes the situation look okay, but it's not normal. Over use of electronics can be an addiction and many people are addicted to their phones, but if everyone stopped for a week, we would realize that everything online or everything that's being projected on a screen isn’t that important. Just because other people are doing something does not make it right for you to do it.

One week without technology can make a difference in someone's life. It can show people that we don’t need little gadgets to distract us. People can be more aware of their surroundings and get hurt less. 7 days is not a long amount of time. The change will be temporary. Shut down our screen week would be a good experiment to try

There is so much in the current world that takes away from the way things used to be. Something as gigantic as the innovation of the cellular phone, or something as little as advertisements in the trays at a security checkpoint in the airport, both take away from the possibility of having a moment of solitude in life. Surfing the internet one can find a multitude of different articles chastising the progression of technology, and how it negatively affects society, but one will not find any legitimate research to back up such claims. Two articles, “Stop Googling, Let’s Talk,” and “The Cost of Paying Attention” follow the same form containing large amounts of anecdotal information while lacking genuine evidence. Both rely heavily on logos…

All of the family’s children went through “physical withdrawals” of technology within the first few hours. Though the children’s withdrawals seem a bit ridiculous, I have unfortunately experienced the same withdrawals those kids felt. As a middle school student, I attended Hartford County 4H Camp which banned technology from the camp’s premises. At first, I thought a whole week without my iPod shuffle and my flip cellphone would be torturous. However, after a few hours of attending the camp I did not seem to miss technology at all.…

On Friday the 16th of October I went unplugged for 24 hours, and found it surprisingly uneventful. I had one minor slip up where I started looking at a phone because I was talking to a person who was getting the proper spelling for words off his phone. Other than that I did not notice a difference from my normal life. For the most part, I spend my time talking to people in person so that is what I did well unplugged. The biggest challenge was making sure I had my school work done before hand because everything has to be turned in online.…

Many times I have been driving down the interstate, and I find myself checking messages on my phone, and playing around with the music. Meaning every time I pick up my phone to engage in these activities, I am risking my life. After reading “Growing up tethered” written by Sherry Turkle, it really opened my eyes to just put the phone down, and go experience what life has to offer. Sherry Turkle, explains how technology is making us become more sheltered, and not being able to experience the factor of being alone in life. When you become dependent on just yourself and not someone else; that is when you will get to experience what life has to offer.…
