Scratch Beginnings Experiment

A topic of discussion that has been popping up lately is the death of the American dream. The American dream is that, anyone regardless of birth, should be capable of achieving what they are able to do. But, many are starting to believe that it is now harder than ever to move up a class. However, The book “Scratch Beginnings” shows how the American dream is still alive and thriving, if you have the right attitude. Adam, the author and main character of “Scratch Beginnings” decides he will start an experiment. In this experiment he takes only twenty five dollars, the clothes he has on him, and an old gym bag to a city he has never been before. There he is able to find a homeless shelter which helps him find a job. While Adam was searching for a real job, he worked at a pay today labor force to earn some cash for necessities. Eventually he found a real job at a moving company, where he was able to have a more guaranteed income. From there he was able to save for a truck and move his way up to an apartment with one of his friend’s cousins. At this point Adam’s goal of having an apartments and a car with $5,000 saved was achieved, he made it. Adam’s real goal in this experiment was to prove that with the right attitude the American dream is still alive. He did so by never giving up, always working hard and most importantly, seeing the good side of everything. His experiment really shows, that the American dream is there for those willing to truly pursue it. Those who believe that the dream is dying may not have the work ethic that Adam had, and may be picky when it comes to what they will do to succeed. Making it in America has not become harder, in fact, it may have become easier with poverty program funding higher than ever.
