Scout's Innocence

Innocence is a stage in someone’s life when they are accompanied by a young mind throughout their childhood. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, a little girl named Scout is set out to experience the true identity of life. Growing up in the racial town of Maycomb, Alabama influences the way Scout contemplates the world as it is. Harper Lee uses Scout’s child-like perspective in order to show the innocence of a young mind. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout’s naivety is displayed through her sense of acceptance. When something seems foreign, Scouts curiosity is clearly shown. For an example, Miss Caroline, Scout’s old teacher. was making sure everyone in the class had money for lunch. Unfortunately, Walter Cunningham, a poor young boy, did not have money to afford it and so Miss Caroline insisted on lending him fifty cents. Since Walter knew he wouldn’t be able to pay it back, he didn’t accept it and this puzzled Miss Caroline. Scout had to clarify the reason why so she stood up and said. “He’s a Cunningham ma’am,” (Lee 14) and sat back down. Scout saw nothing wrong with what …show more content…

For an example, Scout describes Boo as a malevolent phantom who she and Jem have never seen before. As Jem and Scout grow more and more curious about Boo, they are encouraged to try to communicate with him. Their first way of communicating was through the old tree on the Radley yard. Once Nathan Radley, Boo’s brother, found out that Jem, Scout, and Boo were communicating, he filled the hole in the tree with concrete and this upset Jem and Scout. Jem was affected by it the most while Scout was not really passionate about the event. The reason being is that Scout didn’t fully understand what happening or why the tree was even

Scout and Jem found out Mr. Nathan Radley was lying about why he closed up the hole because he said he did it because it was dying but when Scout and Jem asked Atticus, he said the tree was in perfect health. “ ‘That tree’s as healthy as you are, Jem.’ “ (Lee 71) One reason why Mr. Nathan Radley lied was because he knew presents that Scout and Jem found in the tree was from Boo Radley. Boo would hide them in there at night or when no one was looking, but somehow Mr. Nathan Radley found out and didn’t want Scout and Jem to have any correspondence with Boo. Mr. Nathan probably lied about it because he didn’t want them to know for a fact that the presents were from Boo.…

For this project, I chose the quote, “He would be there all night, and he would be there when Jem waked up in the morning” (Lee 376). The big meaning of this quote is that throughout the book where Scout as the narrator has a very educated writing style, the uses of “waked” instead of “woke” shows that she still has innocence. In the book, when she was a child she went through many adult-like events and learned a lot at a young age. The use of “woke” shows how even though she went through some serious events as a child, she still has innocence left in her. For my project, I created a board game that has a childlike feel to it.…

At first, it seems like Nathan Radley is trying to hide Boo and perhaps Boo Radley is mentally ill. This idea fits with how Jem and Scout hear Maycomb describe Boo: as a malevolent lunatic. But then, Nathan Radley plugs up the knothole, telling Jem that the tree is sick when it’s actually perfectly healthy. Eventually, however, “the trunk was swelling around its cement patch.…
