Character Analysis of Scout Finch
Draft 1:
Introduction:
Scout Finch (Jean Louise) is the narrator and the protagonist of the story. She lives with her father (Atticus Finch), her brother (Jem Finch) and a black “maid” called Calpurnia because there mother passed away when Jem was 6 years old and when Scout was 2 years old. She lives in Maycomb County, in Southern Alabama. It was in the time of the great depression when poverty and racism were all – around in the United States. Maycomb is a small town. “Maycomb County has recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself” (Ch. 1, Pg. 6). Well, I chose to do about Scout because I think that she is a really interesting and a funny character as she also likes to be like a boy not a girl. Scout is a tomboy, intelligent and adventurous character. I will be explaining and gibing some evidence (quotes) from the book to proof that what I am saying is correct.

"Scout, I'm tellin' you for the last time, shut your trap or go home—I declare to the Lord you're gettin' more like a girl every day!" With that, I had no option but to join them (Ch. 6, Pg. 27). Scout does not like to act like a normal girl by wearing overalls, instead of wearing dresses and girls stuff. She mostly spends her time by playing with her brother (Jem) and her best friend (Dill). Scout does not care what other people think about her and even does not try to behave like a girl. Scout acts big for her age when she fights with older boys constantly. She hates dresses, much to the confusion and dismay of Aunt Alexandra. Instead, Scout prefers her overalls. “Aunty said that one had to behave like a sunbeam” (Ch. 9, Pg. 84). "Don't pay any attention to her, just hold your head high and be a gentleman." (Ch. 11, Pg.

One of the most prominent changes to her character occurs as Scout’s brawls become less frequent. She mentions that she feels morally superior after avoiding her first fight, and that “I was far too old and too big for such childish things…” (Lee 85). Her conscious decision to stop this aggressive behavior further validates Scout’s development, as she learns to control her temper and sees that there are other resolutions to her problems. Nevertheless, Scout also retains the fighting spirit and pride that she grew up with as she argues that she that would still “fight anyone from a third cousin upwards tooth and nail” (Lee 103).…

At one point she said, “Ladies bathed before noon, after their three-o’clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum” (Lee 5). These were the roles women were expected to conform to, and Scout wanted no part of it. She thought that being born a girl meant that she had to be delicate and- in her eyes- boring. She didn’t want to be like that, and it caused her quite a bit of aversion toward being a girl. That infuriated people, because girls weren’t supposed to act like boys, so they tried to force Scout to wear dresses and be polite when that wasn’t who she was.…

Scout doesn’t want to act like a normal girl because she wants to be like Jem. Aunt Alexandra invited her neighbors over for tea and refreshments and Scout was waiting for Calpurnia to let her do something. Scout was contemplating whether or not to go join Aunt Alexandra and she said, “Aunt Alexandra told me to join them for refreshments; it was not necessary I attended the business part of the meeting, she said it’d bore me. I was wearing my pink Sunday dress, shoes, and a petticoat, and reflected that if I spilled anything Calpurnia would have to wash my dress again for tomorrow” (Lee 306). Through this she teaches readers that being oneself is the way one should be. This takes place at the beginning of the novel, when Scout wishes for approval. “ I was not so sure, but Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that's why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one I could just go off and find some to play with” (Lee 45). Scout has grown up without a mother, and her only mother-like figure is Calpurnia, her housekeeper, who lets Scout be whoever she wants like her father, Atticus, has done. Jem wishes for Scout to not be “girly”, this making Scout worry about not having approval from her older brother Jem, so she spends time with him hoping for approval.…

Gender bias in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is seen without much difficulty, elaborated upon, but never given a solid conclusion. Visible throughout the book, it sends a subtle but confusing message. This seems to occur because the main character of the book, Scout, really has no solid opinion on it because her perspective on gender discrimination changes. The other characters also have differing, if not usually vague opinions on it. Gender bias was also seemingly normal back then when the book’s events happened, so Scout could have just missed it altogether or not seen it as often.…

As the story progresses, she leans towards a feminine style similar to that of Miss Maudie. For example, in chapter 24, Scout tries to be ladylike by wearing a dress and carrying the tray of goods to the ladies having their missionary tea; even though she tries to be ladylike, she still had to wear trousers underneath her dress, and she couldn’t help getting bored by their ladies’ talk and going back to dreamland. Even when she does try to listen to them, she is confused by their hypocrisy. In the middle of their tea, they are interrupted by Atticus with the news that Tom was dead. The women are shook, but they continue to put on a happy face to go back and serve the other ladies.…
