Scott Joplin's Song Maple Leaf Rag

Scott Joplin was born in 1868 and lived until 1917. He was born into a musical family. His father, a former slave played the violin and his mother was a singer and also played the Banjo. Having musical lessons so early in his life, he was quickly recognized as being gifted musically. As a result of this Joplin was given free piano lessons.
Joplin’s song Maple Leaf Rag, a song of the Piano rag genre, was a direct result of his cultural beginnings. He left home at the young age of fourteen and began travelling and playing in honky-tonk and piano bars. His travels then lead him to St. Louis in 1885 when there was a great movement in ragtime.
