The United States of America was a nation built upon the notion of freedom and equal opportunity- in which all peoples have impartial opportunities and rights. However, these principles did not always have their right of way. From the first ship of enslaved African Americans to arrive in the early seventeenth century to modern times, discrimination and racial segregation has always been an issue. In both “Sympathy”-- a poem about a caged bird’s fight for freedom after being liberated from slavery-- by Paul Laurence Dunbar and A Voice That Challenged a Nation --a biography which spoke about Marian’s struggle for equal rights after she had experienced the harshness of the South --by Russell Freedman, the two parties faced the challenges of…

Leaders of the political sphere are able to maintain control by manipulating how "knowledge" and "truth" are defined. I will provide an assessment of the post-modern approach to global politics in the works of Said, Foucault, Nietzsche, Dalby, Rochlin and the Venezuelan documentary “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”. The lack of a single “truth”, may make people more likely to inquire on the behaviour of authority figures, but also allows for the rationalization of action that, under the modern epistemology, would not have been entertained. Edward Said’ “Orientalism” states that the views of the orient (Middle Easterners) by the Occident (Europeans) are constructed in a manner to justify control through a veil of superiority over these…

The Europeans and Americans tried to make people and places more developed. This poem was used to justify imperialism as a noble enterprise of civilization. There is controversy around because it promotes that the Western world (the white man) is the most superior and that industrialization is the way to civilize the Third World. In terms of native populations, the poem shows that the white man had a moral obligation to rule the non-whites. The Europeans and Americans encourage their economic, cultural, and social progress through colonialism.…
