The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a fictional story set during the Jazz Age. The Great Gatsby is about a man named Jay Gatsby who is insanely wealthy and in love with a woman named Daisy. However, Gatsby has not seen Daisy in five years so he throws lavish and extreme parties in hopes that she will show up one day. One day a man named Nick moves next door to Gatsby and he begins to put things into motion for him. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel is well known, and it is for a reason. Fitzgerald uses many elements in this story to make it the successful for a piece of literature that it is. Three of those are character, symbolism, and tone. In The Great Gatsby the weather plays an important role. There are three significant times in the story where the weather has more than one meaning. “The day agreed upon was pouring rain.” Page 83. In this chapter Gatsby had asked Nick to help him see Daisy. Gatsby is sad and nervous and almost backs out of the meeting. The weather sets the mood for this chapter and others. “The next day was broiling, almost the last, certainly the warmest, of the summer. As my train emerged from the tunnel into sunlight, only the hot whistles of the National Biscuit Company broke the simmering noon.” Page 114. The weather in chapter seven foreshadows that this chapter contains the height of the action. This “steamy” chapter is exciting and Fitzgerald adds more to it by matching the actions in the chapter with weather to make it even more dramatic. “It was nine o’clock when we finished breakfast and went out onto the porch. The night had made a sharp difference in the weather and there was an autumn flavor in the weather.” Page 153. This chapter is when the whole story comes to an end. It is the end of many things and it wraps up the story. Fitzgerald describes the beginning of autumn in this chapter to let the readers know that this story is coming to an end. This novel uses characters that are rich and naive to express the author's feelings about the people during that time. Symbolism that is used throughout the story allows the readers to foreshadow what will happen next. Fitzgerald tells a story about the rich, the careless, and the conflicts that they face. Gatsby is a rich man who is in love with a married woman named Daisy who he has a history with but hasn’t seen in five years. Gatsby throws lovely parties in hopes that she will show up at one and see him. However, the only way that things begin to happen for Gatsby is Nick. Nick is Daisy's cousin and so Gatsby asks him to help get them together so that they can see each other. This story comes together with a lot of drama.
