Scot Mcknight's The Jesus Creed

As human beings, our brains are wired to see things we want and then do what is necessary to take ownership of it. In short, we set goals and then work to accomplish them. For Christians, we share a common goal. Our goal is to become more like Jesus with every day that we live. The book, The Jesus Creed by Scot McKnight, provides meaningful stories including practical ways to imitate Jesus. McKnight’s selling formula-- love God and love others. His theory was based off of Mathew 22:37-40, “Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment… ‘And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” McKnight calls his theory the Jesus Creed. He encourages his readers to memorize the Jesus Creed by saying it when we get up, go to bed, and at any other time that it comes to mind. McKnight explains, “Repetition has a way of …show more content…
The author touched on 11 different concepts that stem out from the Jesus Creed. The strong points of the book were the points that spoke to my heart personally. I am always busy. I have read the story of Mary and Martha hosting Jesus at their house countless times throughout my life. I relate to Martha, because she was, “distracted by her many tasks.” Each time I read this story, I am reminded that sometimes I get too caught up in getting all my commitments done that I run out of time and have to throw my time in the Word out the window. I am always completely aware that I don’t have time to read my bible, yet I don’t realize it until it is too late. A phrase that I have taught myself through this story is by saying yes to something, you are saying no to something else. For example, by saying yes to checking Facebook, I am actually saying no to reading my bible later on. This story was a strong point in this book for

Writing about Jesus’ crucifixion, she highlights the characters’ emotions. With small details, she adds to the story so children can understand the feelings of Jesus, like his grief on the cross when he says, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46). Keeping these things accurate, she stays close to the Biblical account. And she does not lose sight of the original meaning of the passage.…

In the book Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, there were four principles to live by. This included: 1) be impeccable with your words, 2) don’t take anything personally, 3) don’t make assumptions and 4) always do your best. One of the major lessons that I derived from the book was to speak with integrity, to say only what you mean and not use your words as a tool to spread false rumours or gossips that can hurt others but instead use it to spread the truth and love.…

Personally, I found agreeance in what Wright said throughout the first two chapters. Something that related to my own life, and what I have witnessed was Christians having a distorted view of Jesus. Wright speaks about Jesus not being sports team (Wright 9). What that implies is that Christians cheer for Jesus when He performs great miracles and blesses them and boo when He allows them to get sick, lose a parking spot, or fail a test. I can attest to doing this, and it is something that is utterly selfish.…

Summary Over ten chapters, Scot McKnight, in The King Jesus Gospel: The Original Good News Revisited, articulated the Gospel of King Jesus. In the first chapter, McKnight provided three scenarios that supported his argument, namely, that there is a need to answer the question of what is the Gospel. The next chapter distinguished a salvation culture from a Gospel culture.…

Through reading the book, Delighting in the Trinity, I discovered how God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are all connected and how that affects my life today. I learned what God desires for his people and how He wishes for us to live a full and flourishing life. As I continue my journey at Taylor University I see how God wants us to live together in fellowship and love one another with the same love God has for us. Reading Michael Reeves book has helped me see the love God has for me. I often take for granted His love and don’t put much thought into it.…

The “becoming a trader” video is similar to the ORU concept of bringing healing to every person’s world because we individually choose to use our time, money, and skills to help people. If we are going to have a career and work we might as well put that time to good use and be a blessing to our employer, and everyone else around us. If I can use my profession in finance to help others, it would be to encourage them to live for Jesus. Many people know about Jesus but do not have a close intimate fellowship with Him.…

Being Consumed helps Christians to understanding and criticising the globalised consumer economic situation of the present. It show cases how humanities economic structures of our present day are inadequate and faulty, and we as Christians need to question these systems and re-line ourselves to The Scripture and its principle. The author, William Cavanaugh, makes use of strong references to Christian resources, such as St. Augustine of Hippo and Hans Urs von Balthasar, to complete his augments with economic issues. William Cavanaugh is the senior research professor at the Centre for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology as well as professor of Catholic studies at DePaul University in Chicago. I believe that Cavanaugh successfully constructs his arguments and assembles a strong support for his goal of the book.…

When reviewing the class notes from this past week what really stuck out was all of the Christian ethics. The reason this stuck out to me was that it helps bring clarity in a time of crisis for me and my family. The “ Principles “ is a moral guidance to live by based off of God’s Commandment. The way I comprehend this is we as Christians must base our ethics on the values and decision that are aligned with God and his commandments. The reason we do this is to live easier and share the love with others.…
