Scoliosis Surgery Research Paper

Improved Essays
As a young teenager, every difficulty I faced, whether I fought with my sister or the hairdresser chopped off two inches instead of one, felt like a challenge I would never overcome. By the time I left eighth grade, I realized that these seemingly life-altering difficulties were insignificant. I attribute this realization to November 12, 2012, the day I underwent scoliosis surgery. Scoliosis, the curvature of the spine, is a hereditary disease common in females. Prior to my surgery, I was ordered to wear a back brace for twenty-three hours each day to keep my spinal curve of twenty-five degrees from increasing. I failed to follow the doctor’s exact instructions because of the pain the brace caused, resulting in a greater curve of fifty degrees.

My ability to learn quickly and anticipate was useful during my spine rotation due to the complicated nature of the procedure and the re-positioning after intubation. In 7th grade I learned that tiny hairline fractures had formed in my spinal cord due to a condition called Spondylolysis. Although harmless in small quantities, enough of these minuscule cracks had formed to fragment eighty percent of one of my vertebrae. To prevent further damage, it was vital that I refrain from any and all excess physical activity. I said ‘goodbye’ to gym classes and sports and said ‘hello’ to a new back brace. For an entire year I watched life from the sidelines and yearned to be a part of the game again.…

More than 7 million people in the United States are affected by scoliosis, 80% of them being idiopathic (“Scoliosis” para.1). Since ancient times, scoliosis has been researched and developed with various types of curvatures and complications.…
