Having scoliosis surgery was definitely an extreme setback for me, emotionally and physically. I went in for surgery July 17th,2014 a freshman now soon to be going into my sophomore year and i was on bed rest for the entire summer. As an athlete loving the sport I play and having so much passion it was unpleasant knowing that I was going to miss an entire season. For the entire summer, it was hard for me to walk again because I was still in pain. I can definitely say I was going through a distraught time in my life having to look at four walls every day wanting to be able to have fun and be active. As the two months of my recovery went by, I tried so hard to try and recover as quick as possible. Although during the time it seemed like recovery was just going to be much more difficult I tried to have a positive outlook on having this surgery done besides the fact that It was something that was urgently needed. The exact opposite happened, I did not have any type of motivation all i wanted to do was go to school and go home. I was annoyed with knowing that i still could not do any activities and extremely frustrated knowing that i basically could not do anything for myself. Before I went to the hospital my family and friends tried really hard to keep me calm before this big endeavor that would change my life forever. One of the things they did was talk to my pastor at my church about blessing me before the surgery. My priest blessed me by saying in a holy voice, “Please God protect Emily from all harm during this surgery, and please be with her during this hard experience.” Another wonderful gesture my family did for me was put on a birthday party, since my birthday was only a couple days after my surgery when I would be still recovering. After the celebration came to a close I went upstairs to go to bed, but before I fell asleep my mother came into the room with a gloomy look on her face.…

A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

Staying motivated was one of the lessons we went over in class. Staying motivated is one of the biggest reasons why some students graduate and some don't. In class, we filled out a SMART goals worksheet, where each letter in SMART stood for something different. S was specific goal, M was measurable, A was attainable, R was realistic, and T was timely. For some students, choosing to attend college after high school is an easy decision. Some are expected by their families to continue into higher education post high school graduation.
