The doctor said my curve had turned into a 23 degree curved and in order to decrease my chance of requiring metal rods in my back, I would have to wear a back brace for a while. My voyage in a plastic shell had officially begun. The gray sweaters I wore underneath my shell were a ghastly sight. Thankfully, I wore my clothes over it so they were not seen except when my friends and family helped me put it back on when it was off. I also had to sleep in it, pretty much every night. I live in Houston, and it is intensely hot at times so that made me sweat a lot, especially in the summer. Thankfully, I did not have to wear it constantly. I was allowed to take it off for activates I couldn’t do with it such as choir and theater. Still, it was never like a walk in the park. I even ended up having to wear it an extra year, even though we thought I would only have to wear it for two years. My long back brace years were very complex. I discovered a trick to use for picking things off the floor, especially clothes. I would take my big and middle toe and use them to grab the piece of clothing. Then after I had it in my toes’ grip, I would kick my leg up making the outfit piece fly in the air. Finally, I would catch it in my hand. I am pretty sure that isn’t extraordinary, but I learned it when I had my brace and it saved me from bending over as much. I still use it sometimes even though I am out of my brace now, just for my amusement. I even try to do it with other things too, such as pencils, webkinz, and erasers. It was a trick that was helpful and entertaining, and all I needed was my brain, practice, and my
