The scientists solved the Elkhorn Coral mystery using the scientific method by following each step of the method to come to a conclusion as to what is killing the coral. The followed the steps precisely so that would not make any errors during their trials.
They started with the first step of the scientific method, making an observation. Paragraph 7, sentence 1 of “Underwater Whodunit: What’s Killing Florida’s Elkhorn Coral” states, “Hot on the trail of where the white pox was coming from, Porter and other scientists ultimately identified human sewage outflows as the source of a pathogen that causes the disease.” The first step of “Steps in the Scientific Method” states “Make an observation.” They made the observation that humans are causing the disease because they are the source of the pathogen.
Later, they conducted an experiment to test if they made a reasonable observation. In paragraph 12, sentence 1 of “Underwater Whodunit: What’s Killing …show more content…
Paragraph 17, sentence 2 of “Underwater Whodunit: What’s Killing Florida’s Elkhorn Coral” states, “We then had definitive evidence that people were the source of the pathogen.” The conclusion they gathered from their results was that humans were the cause of the deaths of Elkhorn Coral. The 6th step of “Steps in the Scientific Method” states “Draw conclusions (hypothesis is accepted or rejected).” They were at the end of their method and they reached a conclusion and their hypothesis was accepted.
They followed each step of the scientific method so they could figure out what was killing Elkhorn Coral in Florida. Thanks to the method, they found out the mystery of why the coral was dying off and now maybe they can prevent more of the coral dying. Based on their conclusions, people are the source of the pathogen, so how can we prevent people from causing more harm to the
