Throughout mankind, there have been many different methods of management theories. Some of these do not prevail nowadays because they are no longer applicable in today’s organizational structure, but some theories are still implemented like Scientific Management and Human Relations. With the end of World War 2, many firms began using diverse method in organisational studies. Until then, most of the firms focused on Scientific Management, which mainly focused on increased productivity, efficient division of labour and work and saw workers as an extension of Tools and Machinery. Scientific management (also called Taylorism) is a management theory that rationalizes and standardizes production techniques, with the objective of improving efficiency and productivity (Sheldrake 1996). Firms began realizing that attention motivated employees even helped the firm get more out of workers for the benefit of the organisation. The Human Relations School of Thought emphasizes things other than financial and productivity variables in deciding the best way to manage a workforce. The managers started thinking that an employee's performance can be increased by recognizing their efforts, that workers should be taken into consideration in any decision that affects them, and that the employer should be democratic rather than autocratic. The purpose of this essay is to critically analyse and evaluate the advantages of Taylor’s Scientific Management over Human Relation School of Thought.
