Colors help most people describe what different objects look like. When white light hits an object, in most cases, the object will absorb all of the wavelengths, except for one group. This group of wavelengths is then reflected off of the objects. The cones and rods in our eyes will then pick up this wavelengths and then the brain sees them as “color”. The reason that solutions have colors is because electrons in the chemical’s 4d orbital are jumping around at different rates. These different rates are what gives the solutions different colors.
Phosphoric acid is the chemical whose wavelength absorption is being tested for. Phosphoric acid in sodas are used for slowing down the rate of bacteria growth in the soda and for making a sharp, tangy flavor. It can be beneficial to a person’s health, but only in small doses. Phosphoric acid is in certain medicines, like TUMS or Pepto-Bismol. These medicines maintains the stomach’s acidity. One of the many reasons that phosphoric acid is bad for your health is because it can deteriorate teeth. Percent transmittance is how much of the light goes through the solution. Calculating absorbance is very simple at this point. The percent transmittance values should be placed in the equation, A= log(1/T), as the variable T. Absorbance is how much light is absorbed in the solution so this equation will show much light is being absorbed by the solution. The relationship between percent transmittance and absorption is the higher the concentration of the solution is, the percent transmittance will decrease and the absorption will increase.
