Science Fair Experience

Science is one of the few disciplines that continues to develop in our society, whether it is through technology or new discoveries. When considering my own relationship to the world of science, I often consider the past science classes I’ve taken. Thinking back to learning about the scientific method in elementary school to constructing science fair projects for six consecutive years had me realize how far I had come without really questioning science. The year I had made it past the first phase of the science fair was in the fourth grade. My dad and I had constructed a clay model of the human ear. It was the first time I had put so much effort into my project. All of the teachers were able to pick two students from their classes to present …show more content…
I took Physics and AP Environmental Science. I figured taking two sciences at the same time could be somewhat easy because they would correlate with each other and I wouldn’t have to learn the material twice or study it twice as hard. I was wrong. I soon learned that physics and environmental science had very few things in common and that the material I learned in both classes applied to my life in a different way. Physics had taught me the physical properties of matter and energy and the phenomena of them and in contrast, environmental science taught me the interaction of physical, chemical and biological components of the environment and their effects on humans and organisms. Trying to grasp these two topics at the same time required focus and hard work, but by the end of the first semester, my attitude about taking these two classes had completely changed. I was able to relate to both of these branches of science because they interested me. I realized that science wasn’t just a core class, but it was something that applied to most of the things I did in my daily …show more content…
I think science has played a major role in our society today and without it, we would constantly be questioning ourselves. One advancement that science has brought along is technology. For example, we wouldn’t be able to communicate information so quickly with others or get responses from people right away. Another way science has positively impacted our environment is through health care. The development of new medications and treatments has made our world a cleaner place. Some of the ways science has negatively impacted our environment is through the experimentation on animals. I don’t believe it is right to use these animals for drug testing because the animals does not having any consent. I believe animals should be used for studies, however we should not have to use them in this way to get the results we need. The development of highly developed machinery can pollute the environment and cause of ecological footprint to become bigger. Science is a very controversial subject and can be argued over most topics, but it is no question that we would not be a more developed society without

Any course with the designation “AP” sounded challenging, but an intensified class like AP Biology sounded more challenging, due to its extensive lab reports and difficult scientific concepts. Taking AP Biology felt like being a doctor, wearing a lab coat or writing a report for every lab we experimented with. AP Biology not only covered the human body at a molecular level, but also provided me the experience of what working in a lab truly felt like. The experience and the class fascinated me and helped me gain some practical experience with tools such as centrifuges or micropipettes. Like AP Biology, Anatomy/Physiology also provided me with lab experience in dissecting various organisms.…

The main goal of teaching science is to teach students how to use science to solve problems in writing or speaking about issues in which science is relevant. Scientific writing and talk often project science as a description of the way the world works rather than as a human social activity that tries to make sense of the world. This will help students learn that science is all around us, influenced by human uncertainties, judgments, values, and interests. Science is creative and science is tentative, which means that scientists recognize that understanding things based on current research. Science is like a law which is subject to change as more evidence are found or redefined.…

Up until high school, I have never experienced science as I did in a high school environment, specifically in DRS, where I fell in love with chemistry in 10th grade. This love for the science influenced me to take upon myself the challenge of AP Chemistry. So far I have further developed and honed my skills. I have further ingrained in myself the idea to question everything.…
