Science Olympiad Experience Essay

The Science Olympiad team at Poudre High School is a microcosm of the larger world of STEM disciplines: it’s a group of hard-working, intensely curious, and scientifically-minded individuals that also happens to be mostly male. My involvement with Science Olympiad has shown me the value of being part of a community of dedicated, diverse, STEM-oriented women within a male-dominated group. The friendships I’ve forged with my fellow Science O women have been some of the most important of my high school career. There’s a certain magic to finding your people, a group that shares your values, aspirations, and interests, and I feel lucky to have found that in Science O. We come from widely varied cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, but

The sciences have been central to my life ever since I was a child. My mother is a veterinarian and my father a mechanical engineer. Both of my parents attended Tuskegee University and always pushed for me to consider HBCU’s for my education. STEM careers and education are promoted heavily in Huntsville, my hometown, as major tech companies and government entities such as NASA and Missile Defense are located there. I ventured out my senior year and took courses dealing with social sciences, both in my high school and at a nearby university.…

OSU Football Coach Woody Hayes once said, "You can never pay back, so you should always try to pay forward. " When one receives a generous act, they are often prompted to reciprocate the kindness, or “Pay It Forward.” FIRST regularly grants FRC team 3324, The Metrobots, opportunities to experience STEAM, making it our desire to give others similar opportunities by “STEAMing it Forward.” Our Team When a small group of students founded The Metrobots in 2010, we faced a lack of proper tools, mentors, funding, community support, and practice space. Additionally, as our team comprises students from Metro Early College High School, a STEM school composed of students from 27 different Central Ohio school districts, transportation became an issue.…

When asked who they would want to spend the afternoon with, many people would respond with names approximative to the likes of George Washington or Albert Einstein. This is justifiable- both were noteworthy men who accomplished a substantial amount in their lifetime. Others would respond with people close to them who bear a great deal of influence on their lives, such as parents or friends. There are many significant individuals throughout history and people who have played important roles in my life so far, but if I could select one person to spend the afternoon with, I would choose Sally Ride, the first American woman astronaut.…

Many believe that the way to help girls become more interested in math and science is to “pinkify” them. They believe that girls are interested in fashion and boys and make-up and that is what program should relate math and science with, in order for girls to become interested in the topics. But what these people fail to take in account is that not all girls are interested in make-up or dating or even fashion. Girls have different interests and programs should take that into account when trying to help girls become more interested in math and science. Also, parents should encourage their children to take interest in the subjects.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

Women in STEM stands for (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professions always had difficulty in excelling in their chosen career often having to face more challenges so than the male counterparts. Being a woman in the STEM field is quite challenging because they have to deal with the lack of respect, because of their gender they usually have a hard time getting into the stem field. For example if, if a man was to advance in his career, the man is entitled to his new position due to the work he had put forward, but if a women were to advance her career, her hard work would be discounted at the possibility that there been external forces to help her achieve her new position rather than evident her hard work. As well, as woman…

If you didn’t have a connection to someone in the government, the chances of obtaining a job were improbable; this was common knowledge amongst the people of my country. I often found myself eavesdropping on my friends conversing about escaping to America. As tempting as America sounded, I knew illegally entering was wrong. I was 17 years old when the connotation of “America” changed for me; my father came home with wonderful news: we had been given the opportunity as a family to move to America.…

    Black Women In America

    • 480 Words

Our experiences in both school and work often serve to alienate us from people of other genders and races as opposed to being a basis for finding acceptance and unity. As a result of this, we create our own businesses and safe spaces to celebrate our own accomplishments and talk about our own experiences; hence the surge in private ownership and entrepreneurship amongst black females in America. Although this is a positive for the community, the lack of black women in the STEM field remains a vast problem, especially for girls like me who wish to pursue a career in that field. It is my duty as a black girl in STEM to uplift and encourage other black girls with similar interests to continue on in with their aspirations, in spite of resistance, as I will do. It is my duty to demystify the picturesque image of intelligent black women in science and to assure my peers that the intelligence we associate with white masculinity is something that we, too, possess.…
