Science Leaders Of Tomorrow Book Report

December 15th, 2013. This was the day I established the Science Leaders of Tomorrow, SLOT, in order to stimulate other students’ interest in science and math. With SLOT, I volunteered at a local elementary school with other students to teach the kids about science and engineering. I once helped a fifth grade student, Manny, who was struggling with circuits in his science class. After working closely with Manny for two weeks, he was able to use circuits to build and program a robot. The next time I went to Manny’s school, I saw him teaching another kid the same thing I taught him. I was truly surprised (and gratified) by his progress; the very student I had mentored had become a mentor himself. At that moment I learned that leadership and learning are indispensable to one another, and that I can continue to lead others in learning at Johns Hopkins with its individuated research and leadership opportunities, such as with the Best Buddies organization. …show more content…
This was the day I first started volunteering at the INOVA Fairfax Medical Campus in Fairfax, Virginia. At the hospital, my duty is to assist doctors with lab runs and to discharge patients who often tell me about their unique experiences. Once, I wheeled out a frail, grizzled Vietnam veteran. He told me stories of the war, how he rescued Viet prisoners from communists. As he was about to leave, I said, “Thanks for your service,” and he responded, “And thank you. You are the hero that helps heroes.” His heartfelt appreciation made me realize the importance of volunteering in society and has motivated me to become a doctor in order to better serve the world. Furthermore, my interest in medicine has deepened as I observed doctors diagnosing, treating, and helping patients recover every day. At Johns Hopkins, I can volunteer at the Johns Hopkins Hospital to gain knowledge and experience in medicine while helping both the patients and the

During my internship at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (STC), I gained more confidence in my decision in eventually pursuing a career in health care, either through being a researcher or a physician. I first started my internship at the University of Maryland STC in my senior year of high school as a requirement for my magnet program. The internship was a volunteer position but we performed basic tasks such as stocking each bay with supplies and saline solution, retrieving blood from the blood bank when needed, and providing blankets and socks for incoming patients. I never paid attention to the importance of these tasks until one specific incident.…

Walking into the Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital for the first time is an experience. The shining academic center had gaping hallways, sizable windows, and modern technology. At the VA, the space was smaller, windows fewer, and portable computers were rare. After weeks of walking the halls, I started to notice different things. Everyone I passed greeted me with a jovial “Hi!”…

When I decided to volunteer at the Del Amo Gardens Care Center, I wasn’t quite sure if I was emotionally ready. In March of 2013, my grandpa suffered a very severe stroke. It caused so much damage that it paralyzed half of his body, so we had to put him in a nursing home. Shortly after starting my volunteering, however, any negativity faded away as I was eager to assist with the activities.…

My interest towards attending Mercer University’s Physician Assistant is largely due to the emphasis the University puts on service to humankind through service learning and integrating volunteering. Being a founding institution that ingrains service to humanity entirely into its culture and academics, there is no doubt that Mercer would provide me with an exceptional opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills of a Physician Assistant providing whole person care to members of the community. Having worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in an underserved community, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, for some time now, I thoroughly understand how important providing effective care to those in need really is. During my experience I witnessed the appalling living conditions that many patients were surrounded by and how difficult accessing healthcare service was for them, thus enforcing medical illnesses to be even more likely to occur among them. I have personally observed how appreciative and grateful many of the patients and the families of the patients were when…

November 11, 1993 –a date typically dissociated with the remembrance of America’s involvement in Vietnam. On this day, the female Vietnam Veteran memorial was dedicated in honor of unspoken heroes, ones whose experiences are unparalleled to the soldiers who partook in the physical fight and incomprehensible to the public’s mind. These brave women, some married, engaged, or mothers, held the burden of a war with undefined intentions both physically and mentally, during combat and upon returning home. Although they played a role in a new kind of warfare, felt the personal sting of the anti-war movement, and suffered from PTSD much like their male counterparts, there was little research done on the nurses and nearly no recognition granted for nearly twenty years.…

    1) Briefly describe your exposure to medicine As the daughter of a pediatrician, the medical field has surrounded me my entire life. However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured. My internship at a medical examiner’s office exposed me to the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the medical causes of death. In college, I explored medicine by volunteering in the emergency department at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in St. Paul and participated in a Global Medical Brigades trip to rural Honduras.…

My whole life I have wanted to do something that reflects my love and compassion for others. Many people go through college not knowing exactly what career best suits them. A career should not be chosen by your parents or based on the annual salary; it should be pursued out of our own desire and passion. I believe that a calling, as opposed to a profession, starts early in life. It is a voice, the ghost of a thought, which starts in the back of your mind.…
