11. Searching for Super is a science fiction novel by Marion Jensen. This book encompasses a world of futuristic technologies and space and time travel. Searching for Super is a story that follows two families that are composed of superheroes. These families battle against a third family of evil superheroes in a town know as Split Rock. Unfortunately, Bailey and his brother, Benny have lost their superhero powers and are highly determined to regain their powers to be able to fight of the evil October Jones and his criminal organization. They need to come up with a way to get their powers back in order to save the town of Split Rock from October Jones and his evil underlings. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares is a book about personal development, adventure, and friendship. The novel can be contained in the young adult genre because the main storyline focuses on the friendship of four young characters who deepen their bonds of friendship by sharing a pair of traveling pants. The story is narrated by Carmen who recounts the activities of how she and her friends spent the summer. Tibby, Carmen, Bee, and Lena will be spending their summer apart for the first time. However, before each of them leave to go on their separate journeys, they come across a pair of pants that fits the four of them perfectly, despite the fact that each girl has a different body type. They buy the pants and vow to send the pants to each person throughout the summer while they are separated. Each of them writes something new on the pants during the time that they have them. This strengthens their bond of friendship and each of them learn that no matter where they are they will always be connected even if it’s through a pair of magical traveling pants. This coming of age story presents the reader with the true meaning of the power of friendship, personal growth and development, being able to learn from their mistakes, and learning how to be independent. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is a young adult novel about young high school teenagers that meet at a youth cancer support group and is partially based on true events that occurred in the life of a 16-year-old girl named Esther Earl who died of thyroid cancer. The novel follows the lives of Hazel and Augustus. Both Hazel and Augustus fall in love while in Amsterdam to meet an author from a book that Hazel gave Augustus to read while in the cancer support group. While they are in Amsterdam, Augustus tells Hazel that his health is not as good as it used to be and they return back to the states and Augustus then has Hazel and a friend do pre-funeral eulogies. The novel illustrates to the readers that despite Hazel and Augustus’ illness that they were still able to show all raw emotions, be expressive, and still find ways to be humorous. Throughout the story there is great attention to detail, strong character development, and a well written narrative that describes what it is like for one to fall in love despite having a terminal illness. This realistic, yet emotionally heart-rendering tale, shows true love and loss. Many will find that they can connect with the theme presented in the book because they too may have personally experienced the loss of a loved one or a life threatening illness.
