Science Fiction: It Was The Worst Of Times

Science Fiction Paper “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” - Charles Dickens. I guess if you think about it, this applies to me. How many people on Earth really are lucky enough to realize the moment they’ve always dreamed about? To look back at your boyhood self, starry-eyed and full of ambition, and think, Yeah, you did it. You made it. I sure as hell didn’t think that, much less so soon. I’m coming up to my mountaintop, my light at the end of the dark tunnel of hopelessness; everything I’ve ever dreamed about is suddenly right before me, waiting to be grasped. And still, I’ve never been so terrified. “It was the worst of times.” There’s a certain apprehension that follows breaking new ground. Chuck Yeager, the first …show more content…
All we have is an exit strategy, an exit strategy that begins with me, Matt Winfield, Captain of the Perseverance, the ship that will bring new life to the planet Mars. Almost half a year ago, a colossal coronal mass ejection devastated the Earth; electronics were all but wiped out, billions died from radiation poisoning, and some of our necessary resources were irreparably damaged. We tried to save ourselves. We were given warning of the incoming doomsday, but not all had the means of escape. Those who did not heed the orders to evacuate to their underground catacombs perished quickly, some couldn’t get deep enough to escape the radiation – they were less lucky. My family, initially reluctant to retreat and leave their home, followed me underground; all survived.
Our green and blue planet barely resembles itself now. Almost all of the vegetation is a sick, deathly brown, far past the point of use. The water and all of its life has been poisoned, and the land-dwelling animals are all dead. No one dares venture to the surface of Earth, for fear of toxic solar radiation. Not a soul has extensively seen the light of day in

I spent my first twenty years out of college with SEA, ten in advanced aeronautical school, ten on a research team, training to be a pilot on the side. After the CME, I thought I’d be out of a job; with so much chaos happening on Earth, people didn’t have time to point their noses to the sky. However, SEA in secret began working on a new initiative upon its inauguration, an initiative to populate and start a colony on Mars, in case a situation like the one we’re in were ever to happen. It’s a good thing they did, too; had they started developing this plan only five years later, humanity would be spending over half that time

While the idea of living on Mars is exciting, it’s not necessarily ideal. Lisa Grossman’s article “SpaceX Mars Plan is Clever but Unconvincing” presents a stronger argument than Eric Betz’s article “The Falcon has Landed. Now SpaceX is Eyeing Mars” because overall, Grossman’s has more authority, is more logical, and uses better examples. 2 One of the main reasons Lisa Grossman’s argument is stronger is because overall, she has more credibility than Eric Betz. Although Betz is associate editor of Discover magazine and has written numerous articles on space and nature, Gossman has had years of experience in astronomy.…

The neighborhood was noiseless, and the sky was pitch black, for there had been no moon on that summer morning in June. My mother and father started our car and waited for Sofia,my sister, sean ,my friend, and me to get inside. It was time to leave our dull suburban home in San Jose, and drive to the beloved National Park, Yosemite, to hike Half Dome. On the car ride there I had slept, but awoke right when we had gotten into the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Looking outside of the window and noticing all of the evergreen trees was surreal for me, as I rolled down my window a strong smell of pine and fresh air poured into the car.…

Serving as an aircraft electrician, engine mechanic, pilot, and parachutist, he excelled during his tour in Korea. For thirty years, he worked as an astronaut for NASA while moonlighting as a trauma surgeon. During Space Shuttle Challenger’s maiden voyage in 1983, he performed the first ever shuttle spacewalk.…

In Mark Twain’s novel The Prince and the Pauper, Twain ingeniously weaves into his story through the experiences of Tom Canty and Edward the Prince of Wales the theme searching for superficial fantasies does not bring lasting fulfillment and joy. Individually, Tom as a peasant and Edward being the son of the most powerful king during their age, both are seeking the experiences of a life impossibly out of their reach, but through fate they are granted their wish and switch roles for a time. However the outcome of their venture leads them far from their foregone conclusions of what life would be as opposites of their inherited social status. When Edward disguised in peasant rags is found by John Canty, he is soundly beaten by him and…

One of the emerging values recognized by human beings is the concern for our environments and the living creatures that we share them with, but what would happen if human beings stopped caring for their planet and completely disregarded any other living creature outside of the human race? Expert biologist, Jeff Corwin, discusses this idea in his article “The Sixth Extinction,” published by the Los Angeles Times. He argues in his article that while there have been preventative programs put into place, human beings are actively destroying our planet and slowly killing off hundreds of species with every deforestation project, landfill, and black-market trade. For his article, Corwin uses real life experiences to strengthen his credibility. In addition to his easy-to-understand writing style, Corwin also pulls his audience into the root of his essay by providing shocking facts that give readers an insight as to what could happen if they continue to disregard their planet and the other living species that reside there.…

The Earth is currently facing detrimental environmental issues. These issues have been evident for decades; however, many people have continuously denied them to be problematic or even their existence entirely. While these critics have managed to get away with the rejection of these problems for many years, it is no longer deniable that the issue of environmental degradation is very real and in need of immediate action. Much of the population has come to understand this, and have executed a variety of modest attempts to increase environmental sustainability. However, these efforts have demonstrated to be of minimal effect in solving the large-scale issues directly causing the degradation.…
