Because of the tradition of prostitutes who made use of excessive amounts of make up to hide their age and exaggerate their good looks, for the longest time cosmetics were totally abandoned by majority of the European population. In “The Making of America’s Beauty Culture” by Kathy Peiss, and in the anthology of pieces commenting on the modern youth of the 1920s, the authors examine of the substantial cultural shifts taking place in the early twentieth century, hallmarked by the shift from Victorianism to Modernity. The 1920s sparked the mass influence of cosmetics and self-conceptions, and the radical change in sexual ideologies and morals, a revolutionary take on the meaning of freedom. In Peiss’s piece, she address the progressive acceptance of cosmetics, and their psychological, economic, sociological effects over time. The irreparable damage done by the beauty industry to women’s self-esteems through the ages is chronicled in her work, and she does recognize the positive effects of the industry as well mentioning the role of cosmetics in fulfilling fantasies. The anthology of works both criticize and applaud the modern yearning for freedom through the denial of antecedent schools of thought through “radical” sexual behaviors and decorum.…

The transition of women’s fashion from a conservative approach into much more sexualized, masculine, and progressive style is a manifestation of key 1920’s themes: materialism as a result of economic prosperity, a rise in the importance of advertising, and feminism. The seductive and masculine fashion and beauty statements of the 1920s sharply contrasted fashion and beauty standards of the 1900’s in that women allowed themselves to transform into multi-dimensional beings beyond the image of the innocent, delicate female that was prevalent in the 1900s. Prior to the Roaring Twenties, female fashion often depicted women as pure, harmless beings. Wearing tight corsets emphasizing a tiny waist and long, bustling skirts, their fashionable outfits were not only extremely conservative (CITE), but also physically restricting; anything other than housework was hard to do. Furthermore, makeup was scarcely applied; women strived for a subtle look, opting to pinch their cheeks instead of wearing…

Imagine days where women could not be lazy. They could not roll out of bed minutes before they were supposed to go somewhere, throw their hair in a messy bun, dab on a little mascara, and call it a day. Instead, women were expected to be fully dressed in a dress, stockings, and high heels with a full face of makeup - face cream, primer, concealer, foundation, blush, eyeliner, mascara, blush, lipstick - so they could spend the entire day at home preparing for their husband and children to come home. This was the case for most women during the 1950s - a time when men were the breadwinners and women spent hours of their time looking their best without traveling anywhere. Fast forward about half a decade and women are still defying and fighting…

Drugstore vs High End Makeup The argument between drugstore and high end makeup products is a growing dispute as drugstore makeup brands alter products to compete with the high-end brands that beauty gurus rave about. The internet is full of tutorials, reviews, and “dupes” regarding drug store products and the comparisons between those and their high end counter parts. High end makeup has often been about the brand name label more than the product itself, just because the name has been associated with good quality, but recently drugstore makeup has become better than ever and is now competing with those high end brands.…
