The government, according to the Declaration of Independence, is to be made “laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” (Declaration of Independence). Safety and happiness are the key goals of our government and are ultimately maximized through a science directorate. The group of scientists that are in charge of running the government analyzes situations and comes to the conclusion that benefits the society the most. American philosopher Michael J. Sandel says “maximizing utility is a principle not only for individuals but also for legislators” (Utilitarianism 3). The principle of utility is something that must apply to the government as well as the individual. The effects of utilitarianism are only perceivable when facilitated through a large organization such as the government. Maximizing utility is also the best way to guarantee the overall happiness of a nation. English Philosopher Jeremy Bentham believed “the highest principle of morality is to maximize happiness, the overall balance of pleasure over pain” (Utilitarianism 2). Morally it is right to do what is best for a community as a whole rather than as an individual. By using reason and logic the scientists are able to effectively do this on a wide scale. This is morally the correct method to facilitate a government. Due to the scientific nature of how our government is run, the outcome will maximize the utility of the nation.
