Schoolwide Proactive Management System Analysis

The purpose of this article is to describe essential features of a schoolwide proactive management system, Effective Behavioral Support (EBS). The EBS approach focuses on enhancing schools’ capacity to adopt and sustain effective practices for all students through: team-based problem solving and planning, administrator and staff commitment and support, systematic assessment of disciplinary practices and processes, careful action planning, ongoing staff development, and data-based decision making, which aligns with the principles and strategies seen in EDUC 362. The ultimate goal of EBS is to increase the school’s capacity to address effectively and efficiently the behavioral support needs of all students and staff. The first, schoolwide EBS, has six essential elements: statement of purpose, schoolwide expectations, procedure for teaching schoolwide expectations, continuum of procedures for encouraging schoolwide expectations, continuum of procedures for discouraging problem behaviors, and procedures for monitoring the impact of the school-wide EBS implementation. One example of a schoolwide procedure that I currently see in my school is using “Beiger Bucks” (like tickets) as a form of a reward. The key to this system is to provide advance organizers/precorrections, keep students engaged, provide a positive focus, consistently enforce school/class rules, correct rule violations and social behavior errors proactively, and teach and plan for smooth transitions. Just like in the EDUC 362 textbook, this article emphasized the need to describe the behavior, built from functional assessment results, make problem behaviors irrelevant, make problem behaviors ineffective, and finding replacement behaviors. An example of a management technique that has been implemented at the ECDC-ND is to ignore as much inappropriate behavior as possible, and give praise to students who are not doing the behavior. I would definitely use this is my classroom. One way I could use this is if students were asked to sit quietly at their desks and a student was talking.
