Should School Be Longer Essay

Mark Twain once said, “I never let schooling interfere with my education.” School is not the only place that learning takes place. Therefore school is not the only place a kid should spend their adolescence. There has always been a big debate on whether or not the school year should be longer. The school year should not be longer because kids need time outside of school, it would cost too much to keep them in school for a longer amount of time, and children should not be denied the opportunities that occur when school isn't in session. The school year shouldn’t be longer than 180 days so children can enjoy their time as kids and explore the different opportunities the world has to offer. Kids deserve to have time off to enjoy their adolescence. “Actually, given the …show more content…
“Time-based reforms have had trouble entering schools because other goals have had-and continue to have- clout with parents and taxpayers.” (Cuban 6). Having real world experience is just as important as going to school. School is great for teaching writing, reading, and arithmetic; but what about work experience, perspective, or social and cultural cues. During the summer kids have many opportunities: getting a summer job to get experience and learn about money, volunteering to gain perspective and realize how lucky they are, traveling to become more cultured and learn about people, summer camps where they can learn to socialize with new faces, or even just staying home and relaxing to see that it's ok to take time for themselves and just breathe before school starts again. Summer and time away from schools is how I learned what this world is really about. Taking that time away from the kids so they can have time to prepare for tests will only take away opportunities to better themselves. Time away from school is what kids need to be able to go back more academically motivated and ready for quality

Typically if a student is given a test before summer break they would have a better score than taking the same test again after summer vacation. Students are able to remember more when less time is spent away from school because they are constantly reexamining material. The Year-Round School serves as an advantage because shorter breaks are implemented to avoid learning loss. A misconception in year-round schools are that they attend more than 180 days but both types of schools attend the same amount. In a year-round school, it may be hard to maintain a job or travel with family in the one month of summer that the school gives students as their summer break. Laura Kelsey, author of “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation” claims, “year-round schools have roughly the same number of vacation days as traditional school calendars” (Kelsey 28). The traditional school calendar gives students 3 months of summer vacation, allowing students and teachers a much needed break. Some would argue that those summer months are the downfall to losing some of the material taught in the previous year of school. However, Kelsey also states, “Learning doesn’t have to stop for kids on long summer breaks.…

It has been shown that schools with year round education have higher annual attendance rates in comparison to schools with a typical schedule (DeNisco, “Year-round schooling gains popularity.”). This leads to better continuity with learning and will result in minimal education gaps. For Beecher Community School District, switching to a balanced calendar meant not just higher, but doubled reading and writing scores for standardized testing in grades third to sixth (DeNisco, “Year-round schooling gains popularity.”). Standardized testing can help us determine an average skill level for a school district or even an entire state, allowing for us to have the ability to grant funding for where it will be put to best use. Having year round schooling would also award us the ability of getting the most out of our education.…

Over the last few weeks as we have been discussing different research topics, we have covered ideas ranging from technology to government. So many different issues went through my mind, but only one stood out above all the rest as one that needs to be discussed more than it already is: education. Education is the system that teaches the people of tomorrow and therefore should not have problems surrounding it. One of the questions that surrounds education is long students should be in school. This issue of a year round school is the topic I have chosen and through some research already I can tell that this will help with future schools in deciding whether to have this school or not.…

As stated in the previous paragraph, there is proof that students lose valuable academic skills during a traditional summer break. This results in an average of four to six weeks at the beginning of a new school year in a traditional schedule being spent reviewing the previous school years material. When in the year round program the short breaks allow for students to retain their academic skills, resulting in less time reviewing and more time spent learning new material. In fact this increase time spent learning new material showed that year round schools had a 2.79 higher math gain and 1.61 higher reading gain over traditional schools. This is critical because first off many students quickly bore while learning old stuff and this may be connected to the 3% higher dropout rate in traditional schedule schools then year round and also less time spent reviewing may play into the higher attendance rates in year round…

Children benefit from year round school because they are not in a hurry to cram everything they need to know for that year in just short nine to ten months. Teachers can slow their speed and actually teach students everything they need to know not just what they need for a test, which seems to be regular in many schools. Students will not forget the education that was taught, for they will not have summer vacation time to forget about school and what they learned from it. Cooper had done experiments on children loosing education while on summer break and his results are stunning, and cooper commented that “most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months”…
