Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
Dan Olweus developed the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) in Norway in 1993. Most school wide intervention programs are based off this original program. For this kind of a program to work the problem of bullying needed to be more directly addressed and awareness of bullying need to be increased (Olweus 1993). It was essential that the issue of bullying be brought to the forefront of all students, teachers, and staff attention. Olweus’ program consisted of training for the teachers and staff in which they learned strategies of how to deal with bullying (Olweus, 1993). The program also consisted of the students learning about strategies to deal with bullying and the rules and consequences of bullying and how to identify bullying (Olweus 1993). One school wide intervention program that has roots in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is known as Steps to Respect (STR). Steps to Respect is a program the focused on the fact that multiple factors influence behavior bullying (Brown, Low, Smith, & Haggerty, 2011; McCormac, 2014). The program focuses on teaching all students how to recognize bullying and change the way that bystanders react to bullying situations (Brown, Low, Smith, & Haggerty, 2011; McCormac, 2014). The program also focuses on helping students to become more empathetic towards bullied students (Brown, Low, Smith, & Haggerty, 2011; McCormac, 2014).
