School Uniforms Pros And Cons Essay

Traditionally favored by small, private schools, school uniforms are being adopted by U.S. public schools quickly. In President Clinton’s State of the Union Address he said, “If it means that the school rooms will be more orderly and more disciplined, and that our young people will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside, instead of what they’re wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear uniforms.” School uniforms or a formal dress code policy in public schools are on the rise, as nearly half have a policy in place or have plans to start one. (NAESP). Mandatory uniform policies in public schools are found more commonly in high-poverty areas. Uniforms keep wealthy students from bragging, prevent gang colors from entering the school, contribute to school spirit, and help teachers identify their students more on field trips or spotting someone suspicious. There are many advantages and disadvantages of requiring them, although school uniforms may be argued for many years. Parents can reduce their financial hardships when their children are limited to wearing one simple outfit everyday. A national 2013 survey of 517 U.S school leaders found that 94 percent of those surveyed believe, “one of the main benefits to parents is that school uniforms are more cost-effective than regular apparel,” and 77 percent estimated the average annual cost of school uniforms per child to be $150 or less. (NAESP). Without school uniform policies, parents may feel pressured to compete with other families by having their child wearing fashionable clothing. Many parents report that three uniforms cost about the same as one pair of designer jeans. Some students admit that wearing the same colors everyday, makes it easier to shop for new school clothes.
