You look left, right, and back left again in the unfamiliar hallway. Everyone’s dressed like me, you realize, easing up a bit in your new school. Because of uniforms, you are no longer burdened with spending your time shopping for the latest fashion to impress your peers. Not only is it stressful, but exceptionally expensive. Now, it seems almost effortless to buy the few uniforms you need at the beginning of the year and say goodbye to wardrobe-related stress. You hurry into your class and soon notice something strange. I feel like I’m not as distracted, you determine. But, of course, you blow it off and proceed with your day anxiety free. When students are dressed in uniform, it becomes easier to spot an intruder. It even reduces the chances that an unauthorized person will be admitted to the building by a well-meaning student. For example, in Legacy Preparatory Christian Academy, signs are posted on all of the exits reminding students not to open locked doors for anyone out of uniform. While this doesn’t guarantee that students will follow the rule, it can only add to the safety of a school. Unfortunately, outsiders aren’t the only people who pose a risk to safety. Students enrolled at the school may be the biggest danger. School uniforms can deter violence by making it harder for students to hide weapons under loose fitting clothing, for gang members to identify themselves, or for innocent students to unknowingly wear gang colors. While bullying may be a matter of physical safety, it’s more commonly an issue of protecting kids emotionally. Bullying often starts when kids are judged based on their clothing. In the absence of school uniforms, clothing makes a statement. It screams, “My family has money,” or “My family is poor.” It exclaims, “I’m cool,” or “I have no fashion sense.” It’s particularly difficult for low income families whose kids can’t keep up with the latest fashion trends to fit in with the crowd. Before they open their mouths to show who they really are, they’re shunned as not good enough. It’s an unnecessary burden for kids in low income families. School uniforms put students on a level playing field. Kids might have a chance to get to know people rather than immediately being judged based on something superficial like clothing.
