Parents around the nation have shown increasing support of school uniforms because their children feel unsafe when they attend school. Numerous students occupy themselves with “fitting in” which can lead to bullying or being bullied and take away from schoolwork. Also, countless inner city schools are facing problems with gang activity among students, which naturally escalates school violence. Schools should be a center for learning and growth, not a place where students are fearful of peers or even teachers. Schools will benefit because school pride can be enhanced with uniforms. In addition, enforcing the dress code will be simpler for educators and administrators. Furthermore, students can gain because getting ready in the morning will take time and they may have better punctuality from not having to worry about what to wear (often a challenge for teenagers). Parents will also save time and money finding and buying school clothes for their children.
While opponents of school uniforms claim that students are not able to express themselves when they wear them. However, this is not the case because students can express themselves through cosmetics, hair (to an extent) and other forms of art. There is still wiggle room with uniforms such as the type of shoes, pant lengths and shirt styles.
