School Uniforms Conformity

For the past four decades we have used this clothing system called school uniforms. These school uniforms are usually worn by private school pupils. There has been controversy about this topic through the past. School uniforms should be banned because children should have the ability to express themselves through clothing, the uniforms could be more expensive, so some students will not be able to afford the outfits, and it promotes conformity instead of individuality.

School uniforms let the students have the ability to express themselves through clothing. As evidence, “Clothing acts as reflection of those changes for many children. Children, who often lack adult freedoms of expression, may choose clothing that reflects their identities and makes a personal statement.” (eHow.com) Moreover, clothing helps reveal children’s feelings, emotions, and personalities. Clothes can also help achieve a boost in self-esteem and self-confidence. In detail, “At a time when schools are encouraging an appreciation of diversity, enforcing standardized dress sends a contradictory message.” (procon.org) Therefore, these schools are sending a misleading message. They’re trying to promote individuality when they’re confusing the message be using school uniforms. To point out, “Late satirist George Carlin asked, "Don't these schools do enough damage, making all these children think alike? Now they're gonna get them to look alike, too?’” (procon.org) Further, many like George Carlin think making children all think the same. Then, making them dress/look alike is odd and a bit cruel.
