Persuasive School Uniforms Speech

It was on January 23rd 1996 that President Clinton had a State of the Union speech at the U.S. Capitol where he addressed the need for uniforms in our public schools. During this speech, the second challenge our president stated we faced was the needed to focus on ways to provide Americans with the educational opportunities that are needed for the new century; and in doing that President Clinton challenged school teachers to teach character education, good values and citizenship (Clinton2.nara.gov, 1996). President Clinton went on to say that if requiring students to wear school uniforms will put a stop to the violence and killings that are being committed on the school grounds then this should be done (Clinton2.nara.gov, 1996). We, as a community, want our children to be in a safe and structured environment while learning; we want them to be able to be fully focused and have the ability to retain all they need in order to become successful.

In elementary and secondary schools, not wearing the latest fashions may be a larger reason for both bullying and peer pressure; however in high school and career and technology centers the causes would be for other reasons. Requiring students to wear the same uniforms will not minimize the amount of bullying and peer pressure students feel throughout their school day.
V. CONCLUSION

It is now at the beginning of the 2015-2016 academic school year that we begin to discuss the desire of requiring all schools within the district wear school uniforms. Having 100% of the schools within the district adhere to the policy will create a sense of unity and belonging. The change of dress code has the potential to decrease violence and bullying on the campus, decreasing the amount of distractions students will have in the classroom, while enhancing school morale and spirit.
