School Spirit Double Standards How would the community react if a mere fifty spectators showed up to a home football game? Chances are, they would be disappointed. They might wonder where the school spirit is. However, nobody bats an eye when it happens at a band concert. The extent to which people expect every single student to be excited about sports is overwhelming. Fine arts students work just as hard without receiving the credit they deserve. Schools as a whole care more about sports than fine arts. Pep rallies are a regular occurrence in support of big sporting events. Attendance is mandatory, sometimes even if students have the incentive of early release. At these events, cheers are cheered, speeches are given, and short, lighthearted games are played. But there are always a few people at the top of the bleachers who do not participate and are sometimes singled out for it. If these individuals had their choice, they would not attend the rally at all. Why does the majority of the student body get so upset when a select few do not show interest in the same things as the masses? But what about after high school? What opportunities are right here within the community to put those sports skills to use? There is no doubt that the love of sports stays with athletes for as long as they want it to, but it’s hard to stay active in those fields once the literal playing fields are left behind after graduation. Fine arts remain an active, important part of people’s lives. From the municipal band, to the Franklin Chorale to the community plays, there is no shortage of opportunity to continue making and sharing art with the the town.
