Intro/statement of purpose
In the United States, there is one school shooting per week (“The long, shameful list of school shootings in America”,2015). Many Students lives are being jeopardized during these school shootings, and not many students are prepared for an active shooting situation. Our proposal is to make a mandatory online presentation and test on the subject of school shootings for the students and staff at DH. Our objective for our proposal is to prevent shootings, and inform students, and Faculty of Cal state Dominguez hills on how to react in case of an active shooting situation. Because of such tragic events that have been ongoing in our country, it is very important to be aware of how you can utilize certain skills that will eventually help protect our DH community from an armed intruder. Our plan is to make it mandatory for students to watch an informational video on mass shootings and learn about ways that they can protect themselves. This informational video will provide examples and things that you could do and use in order to protect yourself. Plenty of schools, cities and even workplaces have trained and practiced in case of such an event happening. According to the FBI (Seymour, 2015) “There are three things you can do: Run, Hide, and Fight.” Aside from watching this video, students and staff/community will take part in a survey that will allow us to see what they learned, if anything, and where DH can improve as well as how DH can help students feel safer. Students will have to watch and complete this video and survey in order to register for the semester. Upon completion, students will receive a certification of completion to keep on record. Lastly, we plan to have DH create a website for those who still want to become more educated aside from watching the video. With this website we hope to include more informative and explanatory ways to prepare for the possibility of an attack. In conclusion, our overall objective is to make sure people are impacted by this video and essentially, help raise awareness that not only in just schools does this happen but it is also an ongoing universal
