Did you know there have been 175 school shootings since the year 2013? There has been an average of 1 per week! ("175 School Shootings In America Since 2013”). The question I want to ask you is how many of these school shootings could have been stopped if there were armed guards present? Even though an untrained guard can cause accidents, armed guards will make schools safer because armed guards can work with teachers to prevent and avoid these dangerous situations or if a dangerous situation was to happen the teacher can contact the guard in order to take control of the situation and many school shootings have been stopped due to the fact that armed guards were present at the time, also armed guards can help observe school children keenly …show more content…
After the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Newtown, CT happened, the National Rifle Association (NRA) proposed putting armed guards in schools across the nation. In a 2013 Rasmussen survey, most Americans agreed with the NRA’s proposal to put armed guards in schools. (“ Leah Barkoukis - Armed Guards Ended School Shooting in Oregon ”). If most Americans agree also, then why has this not been implemented yet? We should have armed guards on school campuses to protect these children and teens! Many people say that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting could have been stopped if armed guards were present at the time. At the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting 26 lives were claimed that day, mostly innocent school children. Mark Mattioli, whose 6-year-old son, James, was killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in December, appeared alongside Hutchinson at a news conference and said he applauded the report’s recommendations and said : “I’m putting it on you, I’m putting it on the experts out there to do something with these recommendations, to implement solutions, so people don’t have to go through what I’m going through”. ( Washington, 2013 ). Yet the Sandy Hook shooting was not the worst shooting, it is second to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute shooting that occurred in 2007 claimed 32 lives which also some say the casualty loss could have been …show more content…
Yes, these have always been problems but with technology advancements in the past few decades have made them much more common and intense. When it comes to bullying, kids can be bullied through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Kik Messenger, E-mail, Texting, etc. The point is that technology has stressed teens out but have helped in ways as far as schoolwork and such. Yet, school curriculum and state standards are increasing in difficulty and this is stressing students out because of the teachers being forced to demand more from the students. With all of the stress that they deal with now depression is at a very high rate now. In 2014, an estimated 2.8 million adolescents aged 12 to 17 in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in the past year. This number represented 11.4% of the U.S. population aged 12 to 17. ( "Major Depression Among Adolescents." NIMH RSS. 2014 ). This causes teens to become unstable and this links to many school shootings, armed guards can patrol the campus and look for these students and keep a keen eye on them. Guards can even tell administration or take it in their own hands to get these students help to prevent them possibly having a breakdown and harming students or other faculty members in the future. These teens sometimes get on psychiatric drugs to calm these tendencies down but

Arming teachers would prevent shooters from coming if they were looking for an easy target (Hagin, Para. 14). This intimidates the shooter because they know that they won't have an easy target at all and that they would most likely die. Matthew Santoni, a well known journalist states,“Gun-free zone to a maniac -- because they're all cowards -- a gun-free zone is 'let's go in and let's attack because bullets aren't coming back at us. If we did not arm teachers then the shooter would know that it is a gun free zone and come (“Arming Teacher Pros”, 18-19). Not arming teachers in this situation is an absolute disaster, thinking about it a shooter could come in as a free soul with no problem to kill anyone they see, but with teachers armed and trained then the teachers could easily rush to the situation and take care of it.…

Everytime there is a mass shooting this debate pops up, yet we continue to have mass shootings. If some teachers were allowed to conceal and carry guns in schools, mass shootings would dwindle. The resource officer at the Parkland shooting never went inside and 17 children died, meanwhile, the resource officer at the Maryland school shooting engaged the shooter and saved countless lives. This illustrates the effects that a capable person with a gun can have on saving the lives of children.…

Specialists have grasped the concept of becoming proactive instead of reactive to situations where lives are at stake. Professionals believe that arming teachers in school districts can help protect children from the up rise of violence in school. Although this idea may be a headed in the right direction, I feel as if there are more effective procedures. Hiring armed security guards removes the cost a school would have to pay to train teachers. This will also eliminate the risk of schools being dropped from their insurance policies or having to pay more as a result of having armed teachers.…

School shootings are a trend that unfortunately has been getting popular for more than a decade. This is causing schools to increase security and prepare for a potential war against unknown individuals. This has shown a negative effect on a significant amount of students who now see school as unsafe. Metal detectors, security cameras, and many other security safeguards have been a regular necessity for schools. Instead of using these things as a last resort effort to prevent violence there needs to be a less invasive plan in place that limits the security presence on campuses without it being overwhelming.…

On July 26, 1764 the Pontiac’s Rebellion School massacre happened, killing ten students and only one survived. These school shootings have been going on for a long time and still going on today. Guns have been apart of this world for a long time, but they’ve never really been a threat to anybody, well they have been in wars and things like that but never in schools until the late 1700’s. I don’t see guns as a bad thing, to a certain extent. Ever since the first shooting happened a lot of countries have made laws to were they have banned guns, but honestly banning guns isn’t going to help with school shootings because the people who are the shootings know what they are doing, and us banning guns isn’t going to stop them.…
