On December 14, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, the city experienced a devastating event in history. There was a mass school shooting. 20 children between the ages of 6 and 7 and 7 staff members were killed in the attack. I remember what the day was like when this event happened. I came home from school and saw all the news stories and broadcastings of reporters. When this event happened I was still back in 5th grade. I remember having a snow day a few days after the event had happened and I was at my grandma’s and we went to a news station and they were just beginning a televised memorial for all the children and staff. This has made me believe that we should encourage these individuals to seek professional help instead of picking on them and shaming them for being “different”. There should be more behavioral health counselors in school systems to help kids as they struggle with growing up.
As an American it makes me want to stand up for people that can’t do it for themselves such as the 6 and 7 year olds that unfortunately died that day. I gained respect for teachers and staff in the school systems because many of them sacrificed their lives for them. It made myself aware that employees of school systems are very caring of their student well being both education wise and safety.
Victoria Soto was one of the victims of the attack. When she heard the gunshots she immediately started to move her 15 first graders into hiding and protection. She was lucky because in the first grade classroom they had a tiny bathroom that she managed to fit all of her students into. She tried get everyone in the bathroom, including herself, but once she tried to close the door about 4 students were blocking the doorway so she picked them up and put them in her place. She proceeded out the bathroom to close the door shut. She had a big file cabinet and she moved it in front of the door to hide it the best it can. She ran over to close her classroom door, but it was too late. The shooter was rounding the corner to her room and once he
