2nd ½ Day Observation, Mrs. Finnell’s 4th-grade Classroom,
Jefferson Intermediate School in Rocky Ford, Colorado on 1/22/2016

On Friday, January 22, 2016, I had the pleasure of observing Mrs. Finnell’s 4th-grade classroom at the Jefferson Intermediate School in Rocky Ford, Colorado. When I first arrived at the school, the 4th-grade class was at lunch. With the principle’s permission, I wondered the halls and observe some of the 5th-grade classrooms that were still in session. The first thing I noticed was that the same posters I had seen at the primary school were posted on the walls. These being the school rules and the noise level posters. I was intrigued about this and asked Mrs. Finnell, who explained to me that this is a district plan that they have incorporated. The classrooms all have the same rules as well. In my opinion, this is brilliant. Not only does it let the kids know exactly what is expected of them, it also takes less time to get students on track at the beginning of the year or when they are transitioning from one school to the next since little or any of the rules changed from the previous year.

The classroom was set up with clear expectations and outlines of each subject that were taught throughout the day. Friday’s are generally their assessment day. Mrs. Finnell was assessing her students on irregular verbs. She first did a review and discussed what makes an irregular verb irregular. She demonstrated by writing sentences on the board that used these different verbs. She then had students complete the first side of the worksheet and come show her before completing the back. The students seemed not to be grasping the concept and struggled through this

While observing at P.S 105 X in The Bronx, Mrs. Downs’s second grade classroom is a surprisingly calm, regular classroom with 25 students. The classroom was filled with the students, teacher and paraprofessional. Usually, there is another co-teacher in the classroom; however, she was on maternity leave. When entering the classroom, I could see on the other side of the room, against the windows the wall was filled with books, as well as bins in the back of the classroom. The wall is switched out each month with different books that go along with the unit.…

Throughout my observation time spent at Reese Elementary, I have had the opportunity to observe two teachers, Mrs. Church, who is a second-grade teacher, and Mr. Dohrmann, who is a fifth-grade teacher. The teachers teach different grade levels and have very different teaching styles which lead to differences in classroom management and assessment, as well as, other categories. Even though there are many differences between Mrs. Church and Mr. Dohrmann they also have many similarities, such as the way they handle discipline and motivation. During my observation hours in both classrooms, I noticed the classroom management procedures that both teachers use. Both teachers have a class schedule they go by to keep the students and themselves on task throughout the day.…

On Friday May 13 I was able to observe two P.E. classes at Mt. Stuart Elementary. There were two sections which I observed, first group was a 1st grade class and then a kindergarten class. It was a very cool experience, since I don’t remember P.E. classes back when I was young. One thing I enjoyed was the teacher’s enthusiasm when the students walked into the gym. He welcomed each student with a smile and with excitement.…

My observation was done on a Pre-K class room at a local Kinder Care Learning Center around 4:30pm in the afternoon. During this time the teachers are preparing the children to leave for the day. The class room was set up to show that the kids were preparing for regular school and not just spending their entire day napping and singing songs. The room had about 6 windows that allowed a lot of natural light, there were 2 square tables with at least 6 little chairs at each table, and a small round blue table. The room was filled with book shelves, cabinets with pictures of the children on the cabinet doors; each child had a cubby with their name and a picture of them displayed on the front of it.…

Tier one is about building relationships with the students in the classroom, their parents, and the colleagues that you work with. While observing I noticed that Miss Reinee is in regular communication with parents through out the day through either e-mail, phone, text, or journals. She also invites parents in for lunch on a regular basis to visit with their student for lunch. Another observation was that she is very eager to help colleagues when they need her assistance. For instance, another teacher needed help with filling out an IEP…

When observing an average first grade classroom many people tend to notice right away who can't behave themselves and who can. While many children stay focused on completing their school work the extremely active children have a hard time sitting in their seat. With the observations of the following two researchers they came up with some possible theories on why these wild children are unable to sit still in their seat. Dr. Madsen, the first researcher, decided to ask the parents of the first grade students to keep a diary of their food intake for a week. The same children were then observed in their classrooms and documented on their activity levels.…

I am currently working as a Kindergarten special education instructional assistant. The classroom was arranged by the head teacher with the assistance of the instructional assistants who work one on one with the students in the classroom. There are areas in the classroom that I believe encourage student learning, while there are other areas in which I would reorganize when I receive my own classroom. The classroom environment and arrangement of the furniture and materials follows the theories of Maria Montessori. The classroom consists of well-defined spaces for each part of the curriculum, including language Arts, Math and Culture.…

Even though there were two students with learning disabilities, she was able to make a lesson that worked for everyone in the room. This is something that I plan to do in my classroom. There was one thing that I would change about this lesson, and that would be to put each question on the board while they are answering it. There were many times that students had to ask Mrs. Hibma what the question was again because they forgot. By having the question on the interactive board, it would allow the student to be able to read the question if they had forgotten it.…

SEP #4 In my observation of a Kindergarten class, there were many different teaching methods used.
