Why is it that school psychologist are still overworked and not working for one school? School psychologists are mental health providers they help address the child’s needs at home and at school in order for them to succeed academically, emotionally, and socially. School psychologist deal with many challenges when it comes to their career. They handle a lot of work load for numerous children. School psychologist sometimes work in multiple schools making it even difficult to even stay above their work load. An issue that school psychologist face is that they are running out of people to keep the positions full time and can have some ethical issues.

Their argument was that there is a huge need for school psychologist especially since the district was planning on shutting down a few schools. Psychologist were needed to help staff deal with losing their jobs and the usual students misbehaving and helping them mentally. Popiolkowsko states that throughout the entire district there are only “twelve psychologist and four work exclusively with students that has social and emotional need while the rest worked with the rest of the students”(Popiolkowsko, 2016). This statement ties into school psychologist being overworked and needing to work in multiple schools. The only reason why the three school psychologist managed were able to get positions filled was because of Trustee Bob Dana. Dana is quoted “the only thing that has changed was the building, so the needs of students are still the same so the need of the school psychologist should not change”. Can being such short staffed, over worked and somewhat underappreciated make school psychologist perform unethically. In the article Administrative Pressure to Practice Unethically and Burnout Within the Profession of School Psychology by Dana E. Boccio and Gaston Weisz. Boccio is a professor at University of Adelphi and has a license to work in New York (Adelphi University). Gaston Weisz has a background in clinical psychology in New York a(Vitals). Just like Weir, Boccio and Weisz state that there is a shortage in school psychology but they believe the issue will “continue until through 2025” (Boccia and Weisz, 2016). The term on how the field is being “greyed out” is brought up within the article which means there are a lot of people retiring from their positions but none are being refilled. It is interesting that Boccia brings up the issue of “greyed out” with school psychologist because it gives some form of explanation as to why there aren’t positions being filled. It leads me to question if this was the reason why newer school psychologist are not being housed in just one school.
