Washington Academy, replacing in school and out of school suspension should be directed more to children who misbehave. According to brainwave research institute, most of the time aggression is simply fear, anxiety, and stress. Surprisingly, Tension and stress dissipate quickly from the mind and the body during meditation. A decrease in stress allows an angry person to calmly step back from an emotionally-charged situation and gain a new perspective on it. Meditation promotes a profound, deep inner peace that makes it impossible to feel anger or aggression - essentially, one cannot hold two opposing emotions at the same time, making it impossible to be at peace and angry at the same time (Brainwave research institute).
Overall, replacing in school and out of suspension with meditation is really beneficial. As stated in Deborah Bloom’s article, she states that a third grader who has participated in the Mindful Moment Room (West Baltimore’s Elementary meditation room) sees a significant change in the behavior of her peers. According to third grader Dacari, the kids that are typically sent to the Mindful Moment Room are “rowdy” and “goofing around,” but when they leave the room, they are “peaceful” and “quiet” ready to do their work (Bloom). Additionally, a facility member of West Baltimore elementary stated

According to Tamar Mendelson, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who specializes in mental health, expressed that mindfulness meditation can help relieve anxiety, depression, and stressors. Furthermore, Mendelson stated that even though mindfulness meditation is a fairly new study with children, she has firsthand seen the impact that mindful meditation has on the elementary children of West Baltimore. Explicitly, Tamar Mendelson noted that the children of West Baltimore come from stressful homes, therefore, they are more likely to behave aggressively. By allowing these children time to reflect and focus their attention on themselves rather than what is going on around them is an effective way to conquer stress and increase their attention span

Whether we were stressed out or just having a bad day we never failed to cry at least once a week in AP World History class. Because of this my wonderful teacher came up with a solution. He proposed that since we were a bunch of cry babies who could barely make it through a quiz before the water works started up that everyday at the end of class we would meditate.…

The Brain on Mindfulness Cecilia Bautista West Texas A&M University The Brain on Mindfulness Introduction The brain is a like a spider-web; it is hypersensitive, delicate, minimal, and connects to many things in the body. It responds instantly and almost simultaneously to outside events, but scientists are still doing research on the brain because they have yet to have a full understanding of it. In “This is Your Brain on Mindfulness”, by Michael Baime, who is a clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, is based on research to find if meditation changes the structure of the brain, if it aides attentional performance, and the way the practice of meditation affects helps people have different experiences because of two different parts of the brain. ATOW Tell a detention story. Last year I got a lunch detention it lasted three days. Lunch detention was loud; everyone was talking about inappropriate things, how they got their lunch detentions, and not doing the work they were supposed to. I couldn’t work on anything that got handed to me and I was stressed the whole time. I feel that meditation would be way better than a detention because it helps the student relax the mind and body muscles.…

The Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavioural therapy has not been in use for long but available information has indicated that Mindfulness Based Interventions are feasible with children and adolescents and seem to be beneficial in both clinical and non-clinical samples (Black, Milam, & Sussman. 2009). They have been successfully applied to adolescents with a variety of disorders (Van de Weijer-Bergsma, Formsma, de Bruin, & Bögels, 2012); Bögels, Lehtonen, &Restifo, 2010). There is some evidence that MBIs lead to a reduction in symptoms of depression in minority children (Liehr & Diaz 2010). Besides this, MBIs may lead to a reduction in anxiety and increase of social skills in students with learning disorders (Beauchemin, Hutchins & Patterson.…

According to the Dalai Lama (2001), mindfulness can enhance presence in four ways. First, it can heighten the sustainability of focused attention. Second, mindfulness practice can enhance self-compassion which should lead to greater empathy and compassion with clients. The compassion and acceptance developed in mindfulness practice is viewed as ultimately valuable as the basis of compassion and acceptance toward others (Dalai Lama, 2001). Third, mindfulness can offer a way to reduce stress and enhance well-being and care for one’s own self.…

This was out of my typical culture for two reasons; first, I am Christian, not Buddhist, and two, I have not ever meditated or even witnessed someone meditating to my knowledge. I will admit that I generally look on meditation as a waste of time that can be used to complete something constructive. I was a bit nervous about attending as it was an experience I was completely unfamiliar with and I had no idea of what to expect.…
