Schools are required to make their lunches healthier, whether they have to add fruits and vegetables, to taking food away and lowering the serving amount they give kids. Many students, parents, lawmakers, and administrators say that eating as healthy as the government wants is too costly and that it does not provide enough flexibility for the students. Schools want to make their lunches healthier, because they are trying to lower childhood obesity, because 17% of the children and adolescents are considered obese. Since 1980, obesity rates have tripled for those groups. According to ‘Schools Hungry to Improve Taste, Nutrition of Lunches,’ the estimate of calories for students is; 550-650 calories for kids in elementary. The estimate for teens is 600-700 calories for middle schools students and 750-850 calories for high school students; No matter if the students are constantly active, if they play sports and exercise, or if they are just a couch potato that just lies around. The schools say that they are creating their lunches the way they are, so that the kids get health food so learning is easier. They also are trying to meet all the federal requirements, even though they have a limited budget. …show more content…
About 73% of them are enrolled in participating state schools. The school meal program has to feed almost 32 million kids daily. 15%-20% of the programs money is used to purchase items like unsweetened applesauce and low sodium canned beans, and lean ground beef, to turkey roasts. The USDA says,” The menus at schools are being shaped b what children eat at home.” Although many students say they won’t throw the food away, but it never can compare to the food they get to consume at home. Some schools are trying to do a “Taste Day” where they have certain foods out that the kids can try and do a survey on what they like and
