I am writing you today on behalf of bill HR 5003 by Bobby Scott, which will expand the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) to colleges. Being a University of Houston’s student with a nutrition major, I am compelled to bring up the matter in the hands because many low-income college students are struggling to concentrate in education due to the hunger. Improving the access to nutritious meals for the low-income students will improve the student’s diet, academic performance, achievement and behaviors. It will also positively impact 1326 or 40% Pell grant recipients and other low income student by reducing food insecurity.     Partly for these reasons, the NSLP has been consider both economically and politically feasible since it meets with current values of humanitarian organizations and from the market system. However, despite that the NSLP was intended to help unassisted children, a major shift to the NSLP did not occur until 1961 when the program became amended by president Lyndon B. Johnson to benefit children that lived 130 percent under the poverty line. In addition, the 1961 amendment also promised more financial relief to states who couldn’t meet the budgetary demands. This means, that for states who couldn’t pay half the student’s price lunch, the government will assist them with more monetary relief. Even though, the National School Lunch Program is control by the federal government and run by the Department of Agriculture(USDA) and the Food and Nutrition services, states still have to contribute a pay for each student’s lunch.…
