Gatto also talks about how the US schooling system works. He says that it is based on the Prussian system. The Prussian System is a system of education established in Prussia because of educational reforms in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Gatto did this to convince the audience that school isn’t actually necessary in order to become someone important, or to achieve great things in life. The main purpose of this article is to prove to people that schools are to “dumb people down, to demoralize them, to divide them from one another, and to discard them if they don’t conform.” (John Taylor Gatto) The problem with public schools is that they do not offer enough courses for students to be able to choose from. If a student wants to go into computer science, there is no reason for them to have to take a science class, because they will never end up using what they learned in that class in their life.
