Personal Narrative: My Experience In Public Schools

Improved Essays
I have interviewed 4 different people, 2 of which went to catholic school and 2 went to public school. The people I chose to interview was my grandmother grandmom, my other grandmother bopsie one of my family members who i do not know her relationship to me, and my coworker, Sarah. The reason I chose these specific people was I wanted to interview at least 3 adults cause they have more experience with school and life. I also wanted to interview my coworker even though she is only 19 she still has experience in school and a little experience in college. As I said before my grandmother Grandmom and my relative both went to catholic school in Baltimore, Md. My grandmother Bopsie went to a public school in york Pa. There seems to be less respect shown by both teachers to students & visa versa. There is no discipline. Parents do not parent which makes students less likely to behave - your mom & dad do parent & are in the minority. There are more subjects to choose from for your classes. There are more options as far as professions too to go into when you graduate from school & college. Mamaw Raver only went to 8 th grade & Papaw only went to 7 th grade. They both had to leave school & work on family farms. That was typical of Southern York Co. However, your Mamaw and Papaw Metzler both went to college & got their Masters degrees. My friends changed a bit between elementary school and high school, but for the most part they stayed the same. We all pretty much took the same classes. Schools are very different today. Students have many options and choices. There is more pressure on student to do well. I believe that it is an expectation for most students to continue with college after completing high school. I also think that teachers teach differently. There is a lot of pressure on them to prepare their students to pass so many different standardized tests. We all took the same courses all through school. I attended school in the 60s and 70s, school days seemed longer then today. Today there is more consideration for kids with disabilities and behavior problems. I also think there is more diversity in schools. Also in my day teachers had more flexibility in disciplinary actions and parents supported teachers rather then now it seems to me the parents assume the teachers are wrong and the kids are always right. My father only had an eighth grade education because he had to work to help support his family. My Mother had a 10th grade education. During their generation it was a luxury to go to school where as during my childhood it became the law that

As I looked around at my new classmates on my first day of public school, I was in complete shock. All around me I saw students who did not care in the slightest about their education and who saw school as simply a chore instead of an adventure. They slumped down in their chairs, cheated off of each other left and right, rolled their eyes at teachers, and spent each day watching the clock, waiting for the bell to ring that would released from their “prison.” That August morning, I felt like I was in a completely different world: one where I did not belong.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before.
