By defining them, teachers can better pinpoint the problems during their two minute conversations. The well-behaved child responds positively for a purpose. Likewise, the child who acts up is doing it for a reason as well. One of the most important things that a teacher should identify during this process is why the behavior is occurring in order to put an end to it. According to Dr. Rudolph Dreikurs, the author of Children the Challenge, there are four main reasons why children misbehave (as long as they are not sick or tired physically). These include: a desire for attention, power, revenge, or because they feel inadequate and have low self confidence. Many adults might wonder why a child selects misbehavior over good behavior, but according to Dr. Dreikurs, this is the wrong question to ask. A more beneficial one is “What does the child hope to gain from their misbehavior?” (Dreikurs & Soltz, 2005). With so many reasons for misbehavior, it would be nice if there was one easy fix.
