School Dress Codes

I have been researching school dress codes to get the truth on why they are so strict against females and how we can reform them in a positive manner. Now I´m going to share with you, some of the most important information that has been discovered about this issue. Many schools believe that dress codes are necessary to prevent distractions and disruptions in classrooms. The first school dress code was issued in 1969 and has become stricter and stricter since. Now schools are telling teenagers what they can and cannot wear; current dress codes are targeting young ladies and their clothes. Authorities say the attire of teenage girls is a distraction to the boys in school. This is sending an incredibly powerful message to students all around …show more content…
Pants such as leggings, yoga pants, spandex running pants and other tightly fitted clothing have been banned from schools. Some schools allow students to wear these pants as long as the shirt they are wearing follows the fingertip length rule all the way around. Also some schools have the rule that jackets, coats, athletic shorts, tank tops, and sweatpants cannot be worn. Other restrictions on students apparel are things such as holes in jeans, some jewelry, hats and bandanas. Students are limited to what they can wear to school; this makes it very hard when purchasing clothes for school. It is very uncommon that you can find a pair of jeans without holes in them or shirts and shorts that are fingertip length all the way around. Stricter dress codes not only affect the students but also affect the parents who are purchasing the clothing. Imagine being called into the principal´s office, being sat down and told you need to change what you are wearing because it is ¨too revealing¨. The principal says if you don't have anything else to wear, you will be forced to wear some dirty, old, unknown article of clothing from the lost and found. If we keep enforcing stricter dress codes students and parents will only rebel and protests will begin to occur more often. These dress codes can be improved by loosening the collar and allowing the students to dress how they want in order to be …show more content…
School handbooks state that the administration will not become involved in the situation unless the dress ¨interferes with the educational process¨. This is saying girls bodies are an invitation for sexual aggression unless they properly cover up. As said by a student participating in a protest against the new dress code policy at Haven Middle School in Illinois, ¨Not being able to wear leggings because it's too distracting for boys is giving us the impression that we should feel guilty for what guys do.¨ (Culp-Ressler 1). These dress codes link girls´ clothing to boys´ inability to control themselves. Every day, every week, every month, every year, students are faced with the authorities furthering unhealthy attitudes about sexuality. If we don´t stop sending this message to the students, these girls will grow up thinking they have to work to prevent themselves from being ogled by men. We need to take a step towards teaching boys that they should stop (externalizing)objectifying their female

I have decided to write this journal article on an article that I found online that speaks directly to experiences that I had throughout middle school and high school. The article is titled, “The Sexism of School Dress Codes”. A young girl named Maggie Sunseri noticed that the dress codes in her school were geared more directly to girls than it was to boys. At first, Maggie rightfully saw this concept to be unfair. The rationale that the administrators gave behind this idea, however, was even more upsetting to Maggie.…

Dress codes standards send home students every day, all over the country, for being too revealing. Most are girls, and on occasions, boys that struggle with the standards, therefore they should be lowered. It’s taking away from your class time, limits self-expression, and the rules can sometimes not be correctly administered are all problems caused by dress codes standards. The dress code can take away from class time because everyone is more concerned with how we are dressed, rather than worrying about if we’ll do good on our next math test, or studying for the history final. During class, teachers can stop their lesson to tell one of their students that they are violating dress codes, therefore taking time away from class and from other students learning for something that is not relevant outside of school.…

Enforcing School Uniforms for the better of our future An article called “Should school uniforms be required in public schools?” have studied that “Nearly 85 percent of principals whose schools have uniform policies said that uniforms positively influenced their school 's image in the community” (procon.org) In the article “The Sexism of School Dress Codes” Li Zhou mentions a story about a girl named Maggie Sunseri who attends a middle school in Kentucky. She mentions how she has never seen a boy called out for their dress violation yet girls are always getting in trouble for what the are wearing. Maggie mentions that school administration are unfairly targeting young girls by blaming them for promoting sexual harassment. (Zhou).…

According to www.mtnviewhs.com/dresscode.html, “No sleeveless shirts may be worn or any type of clothing that exposes the armpits”, it also states that “bare midriff clothing, halter tops, strapless tops, backless tops, racer back tops, spaghetti straps, tank tops, sleeveless shirts” are not allowed. Girls should not bear responsibility for boys’ reaction to their bodies, instead boys should be taught to control themselves instead of blaming girls for their ‘distractions’. It shouldn’t be normalized in school that the female body is a hindrance. It also states on http://www.mtnviewhs.com/dresscode.html “Athletic stretch pants of any length should not be worn. Pants should be worn at all times and not be so large that the crotch sags.…

Students from Burroughs High said that “According to the policy, their clothing must not detract from the academic environment.” Schools often say that wearing these clothes are wrong and that they shouldn’t be worn. But, it is their bodies and girls should be wearing what they want and the distraction is actually the teachers sending classmates out for distracting the class. Often it is the male teachers say these things on a few occasions women only dress code them for respect not in a sexual…

Do school dress codes discriminate against female students? School boards should reconsider dress codes that focus on restricting female clothes because equality is a critical topic in society, and the change in rules will help female students feel more confident about their bodies. The human body is extremely sexualized, especially regarding the female body. Females are oftentimes harshly judged based on the clothes they wear, a prime example of this is seen in the school setting. I plan to address the psychological effect dress codes have on all students by asking them about their opinion on their school’s dress code.…

The idea of school dress codes being sexist and encouraging rape culture has become very popular across school districts. There are stories about protests and strikes all around the country. I have witnessed these “dress code violations” and from what I witnessed, none of these girls were in the wrong. There have been too many times that young ladies get dress coded because what they are wearing is a “distraction” to young men. These boys need to be taught self control and I should not get punished because I was dressing comfortably for the weather.…

Everyone has their own opinion on what attire is appropriate for school; some people may feel that some of the clothes that the girls wear is “too much”, but what exactly is too much? A majority would say that revealing shoulders and bra straps are inappropriate, but others would think differently. While some of the clothes people wear shouldn’t be worn in a learning environment, society shouldn’t be biased and make a fair dress code for both male and female students because it can make female women students ashamed of their bodies, which is degrading and makes them out to be sexual objects. With male students having the privilege to wear almost whatever they want, it makes females feel like they should cover up their bodies due to the fact that their bodies can distract boys from getting an education.(Since a females education isn’t as important). There has been many incidents where a female student would be taken out of class or sent home because her shoulders were showing or was wearing shorts on a hot day.…

The “distraction” that girls have on boys? Although it is inevitable that boys have no control their hormones (specific circumstances) why should girls have to pay the price for that? Yes, it is necessary that girls represent themselves in public, even at school, in the most modest way possible, and by modest; shorts that do not reveal their entire buttocks, and shirts that do not show too much cleavage nor see-through. Dress codes are a way of posing the male population as “weak”, unable to be held responsible for their inappropriate actions, so who is to take the blame? Women.…

But never does the dress code point out that it could be the same way for boys. Dress codes are sexits because they are mainly directed towards female students, they make girls uncomfortable and they teach students that a girl's body is sexualised. Dress codes are not always the same, and the deciding factor is really how the school decides to deal with the problems or dress code. Dress codes can really change how girls and boys see each other and themselves, which is not always a good thing. For girls, dress codes can be the one thing that makes them insecure, because they are scared of the boys and…

The effects of social control on women’s dress can still be seen in societies today. It is especially severe in grade schools and high schools across America. These young girls are restricted on what they are allowed to wear because they can’t be “distracting” to boys in their classes. Shorts and dresses must be a long length, and shoulders and collarbones cannot be exposed. Some schools are more strict than others, but irregardless the issue of the dress code still persists.…

If the situation is getting out of hand such as when the Albemarle County, Va passed rules towards a new dress code when lawsuits were filed and eventually taken to court where the judge said,”’the dress code is too broad-- and may be unconstitutional’”(Robson para. 6). With a school under these lawsuits and feeling as though their students are wearing inappropriate clothing; the easiest way to handle the situation is to enforce a school uniform. This way all genders are treated equally, the reasoning behind the rules are set in a reasonable manner, and the dress code is easy for everyone to follow. All schools that don't require a certain uniform including Jackson High School should adjust their dress code with the ideas of: the difficulty to follow the dress code, the reasoning behind the dress code, and the inequality of gender treatment. These changes in all schools alike would make the environment so much better for teenage girls constantly on the search for clothes that are, cute, appropriate, and fit their size.…
