Inspiring Creativeness in a Uniform World School dress codes are a confrontational topic between board officials, parents, and students. How does clothing have such a massive effect on an educational institute? Shouldn’t the focus be on education, and not on the students’ clothing choices? Let the students be who they are in a learning environment, and let them portray their personality. We are a spoon fed generation, and numerous adults try to shelter their children from things that they need to learn before they enter the real world. School dress codes have become progressively stricter as the years pass by, this may be a result of students dressing more inappropriately due to today’s advertising and the pressures of modern day society. …show more content…
As the schools keep getting stricter with the dress code policy, additional students will be sent home for violating this policy, which results in additional time out of class, and less learning. I do not agree that students should be allowed to wear shorts way too short, or jeans that show an excessive amount of skin, however I do think the students should have further freedom and that the opposite gender can learn to control themselves. Students, of any gender, should be taught to contain themselves, and to be responsible enough to overcome possible distractions. These dress codes will not correspond to people and life in the real world. High Schools should instead retain the focus on education, then teach students about making ethical choices; while being confident with themselves. Let students be who they strive to be, and let the students be creative. Fresno Pacific University has an article concerning dress codes, this article states “The lack of uniform approach to acceptable workplace dress does not mean each workplace does not have expectations. Rather, it means students need to adapt, not conform. Students need to learn to dress appropriately based on context. Dress codes do not facilitate this learning. Instead, dress codes teach students that conformity and obedience to authority are utmost imperative. Individuality is suppressed. Student voice is suppressed. These outcomes do not match the qualities employers look for. Employers want adaptable worker’s adept at creative and critical thinking, good decision-making and effective
