School Dress Codes Body Shame Young Teen Girls

What would you do if you were a fourteen-year old girl whose clothes weren’t appropriate for school? Girls all over the world are being dress coded for their clothing that they buy themselves. These teens have to deal with these problems every day at school. School dress codes body shame young teens because they are more restrictive for girls which leads to over sexualizing young teens. Dress styles have changed and so should the policies. Dress codes can lead to body shamming and self-esteem issues in young teen girls. The middle school says vulgar or unsafe clothing will result in being sent home. The same fifteen-year old girl, said “she was given an in-school suspension for wearing shorts that were to her mid-thigh. Her teacher suggested that her clothing was suggestive and that she was "asking for it." The girls who are wearing these clothes are wearing them because it makes them feel confident about themselves. She also stated, “Just because I’m wearing this doesn’t mean that I want people to look at me sexually, I want to be seen as a woman.” Students from Burroughs High said that “According to the policy, their clothing must not detract from the academic environment.” Schools often say that wearing these clothes are wrong and that they shouldn’t be worn. But, it is their bodies and girls should be wearing what they want and the distraction is actually the teachers sending classmates out for distracting the class. Often it is the male teachers say these things on a few occasions women only dress code them for respect not in a sexual
