School Dress Code Violates Freedom Of Expression

Dress Free Some school districts decided to enforce dress codes that limits students on what they want to wear. Why schools put in a school dress code? The dress code violates freedom of expression, promotes sexism and poses little to no effect on safety. Is this the school’s way of controlling the students? The students reacted to the dress code. School dress code violates the students freedom of expression. School officials quickly enacted a no armband policy when the students protested the dress code. “The court indicated that the dress code is too broad and may be unconstitutional.”(Haynes page 3). But all students speech is still protected under the Tinkers case. “Unless the school can demonstrate with reasonable evidence that the clothes students wear will cause a substantial disruption they can not ban it.”(Haynes page 3). If a girl violates dress code they are sent home to change, but if a boy violates dress code they would be expelled from school. “Curvy girls are exclusively singled out typically told their outfits are to distracting to others students.”(Orenstein page 2) By 1974 there were over 150 court cases about young mens hairdos. “The research is pretty clear that it is never appropriate to shame any students, or to make them feel degrading or diminished.” If this keeps up students would have more anxiety attacks, increase in depression and be more aggressive towards others.
