School Dress Code Essay

Sex, In today’s day and age, that is what many believe is on every teenager’s mind. In modern public education systems, this belief has been taken to a new extreme with the enforcement of dress codes that objectify the source of temptation, any female student. Since school integration in the early 20th century, school officials have attempted to facilitate the education of the students with the rules and sanctions they put in place. Many of these rules followed outdated, misogynistic principals and serve to preserve the sanctity of the male education at the cost of an “immodest” female. To require a “school-wide” dress code would imply equality in the enforcement, however many schools posses misanthropic views that are used to objectify female students. According to Happel, a school may implement a dress code to comply with the principle of such rules, however “...studies suggest that there is no significant impact on these [the overall school environment and student achievement] through the introduction of uniforms” (94). If there is no significant impact, then why are more and more schools instituting dress codes every school year? The answer lies behind the false morality of administration that suggests that an enforced standard of “modesty”, set by such administration and enforced as it sees fit, protects the students from themselves. Educational systems were founded to help train future generations, and a major aspect of achieving this goal is enabling the students to have a productive learning environment.
