Benefits Of Later Starting School

Improved Essays
I believe that school days should have a later start time for the sake of teens. The lack of sleep affects teens in many major ways, such as, obesity, depression and an overall lower quality of life comes from the lack of sleep and early start times in schools. Kids are recommended between 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep every night to be able to function both physically and mentally. Researchers that studied students from eight different schools have found there is a major increase in attendance, test scores, and overall grades when school started later. They also saw a decrease in tardiness, substance abuse, and depression. Some schools even saw a difference in the amount of teen car crashes. Unfortunately, some parents disagree with a later …show more content…
A later start in the day allows students to sleep in longer and get the sleep they need. Adults want teens to be more awake and alert in the morning so they can learn and participate at a higher level. Students can thrive better mentally and physically which helps them do better in school. Students normally have better attendance, grades and a lower rate in depression. Sleeping in later gives teens the energy they need to perform everyday at school. Everybody learns better when they’re awake (Richmond). Most students don’t fully wake up till 3rd period, anytime before that they don’t learn properly. Usually for teens it is more difficult for them to fall asleep earlier at night, compared to other ages (Richmond). So waking up early becomes harder and harder for teens every …show more content…
Parents think it will push back or even cancel their sport practices or any other extra curricular activities. Also they might rely on their teens to watch their younger siblings after school while at work. The problem is parents are only thinking about the negative things. They don 't think how it could help teens with more sleep. Another problem we’re facing is that most schools and parents want to save money. The school board saves money by doubling up on buses. (Later High School Start). They combine the younger kids and the older kids on the same bus for the morning route. After school sports are not the only thing that may affect a later school day. Most parents encourage their kids to have an after school job. If school starts later in the morning and ends later in the afternoon this could mess up their work schedule, shorten their hours, and even sometimes making is so they can’t work at all. I believe all of these problems can be fixed in some way, so teens don’t stress about all their problems and can get more sleep and do better in school. High school days should start later because it would benefit both the students and the school system. Many adults don 't agree with the changing of school times, but pushing back school later helps teens extremely. Yes, it can affect afternoon activities, but also it can help teens be more lively and motivated with the

Even though some say that with the extra time to sleep students won’t be studying as much, many studies show just the opposite. Information shows that test scores significantly rise when students get the correct amount of sleep. O’Neill says, “One 2012 study found that middle schoolers’ test scores rose in reading and math,” (O’Neill 20). From this quote, it is definite that when school starts later, school performance improves. Additionally, some more research shows that when school began at 8:35, grades in almost all subjects rose.…

School times can sometimes be absurdly early, but because of later start times some problems stir up. Later school start times can increase grades and the well being of the kids, but the downfall of that is that schools have to pay extra for more buses because usually a district only has a few busses, which then makes the school start times staggered. Although the wellbeing of kids is far more important. The idea of staggering school time is smart but if its hurting the health of people I would pay the extra money to keep kids safe. The first reason that school should start later is because it will allow kids to be more well rested and makes it easier to focus.…

It can also affect many school activities with having to start later and end sooner since the day ends faster. Teens shouldn’t be affect with these possibilities of not being in an activity because the later changes. There has been a non-scientific survey that has reported 50 percent of parent that have agree or are undecided with the new time changes and 60 percent of staff agreed with the change. I believe that parents think it’s right for their children to start later or earlier because of the evidence that they have been provided about their children academic improvement. Staff had worked in school with the children and they might also believe it is right because it can change their school education but they don’t understand that it can affect the different schools because it will not be the same times for all…

In other words, the list of the benefits includes changes in almost all areas that affect the mental and physical health of adolescents. In addition, Emily Richmond, in her article “Why School Should Start Later in the Morning”, argues, “Schools also saw the decrease in … substance abuse. Some even had a dramatic drop in teen car crashes” (1). In other words, even those areas that seemed not very connected to change in the sleep schedule had been affected by the change and in turn affected the lives of students.…

People worldwide are concerned about schools starting too early in the day and have been debating about the benefits of later school start times. Every weekday, students must face the struggle of waking up early to get ready for school without getting enough sleep the night before. Schools starting at a later time during weekdays would allow students to have extra time to sleep in the morning and be more alert and focused. This can result in less sleep-related car accidents and tardies. It can also provide opportunities for students to succeed in school because studies show that alert students are more willing to study and understand concepts than if they were tired.…
