School Counselor Personal Characteristics

During the residency I became more self-aware of my ability to be able to take on new situations. I also learned that being a school counselor is truly what I want to do. I felt inspired at the residency and felt empowered that I would be bringing back more to myself, students, school, and community. However, I also became self-aware of my need for personal time. Being away from my family and work and taking into account my more reserved nature, I found that I was able to reflect on my own needs. I like people and am passionate about working with children, but also came to realize that I need my own space and time to myself. This will be important for me to be aware of and make sure to schedule time for myself.

Which personal characteristics will enhance and inhibit your work as a school counselor?

Personal characteristics that will enhance my work as a school counselor include empathy, acceptance, being able to take feedback, initiative, and positive communication. I would say that the feedback of needing more facial expression was accurate. I found it difficult to act as though I was in a real situation, which made it hard for me to get into character. However, I got better at it as the days went by. During my last role-play I wanted to get down on my knees when speaking with a hypothetical first grade student, but I did not because I felt that I had to stay in the chair. The feedback that I received from the professor was that I could have gotten out of my chair and onto my knees to be on the same level as the first grade student. Validation from professors can be helpful in creating and gaining a professional identity (Gibson, Dooley, Kelchner, Moss, & Vacchio, 2012).
